Why last night rocked:

  • TOR over WPG, 4-0; Jets move on to Buffalo Saturday, where they are 0-4 (2 OTL) in past four

Why last night jonesed:

  • OTW over TB, 4-1; Sens' minus-9 goal differential worst of top-nine teams
  • PHI over CHI, 5-4 (REG); Flyers are 7-1-2 vs Western clubs
  • BOS over CGY, 9-0 (REG); Why the Flames haven't yet called it a season and blown up the roster is truly baffling

Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla:

  • BUF at CAR, 7 p.m.
  • NYR at PIT, 7
  • NYI at ANH, 10

Next up for the Cats:

Tonight from Newark; the LBC Game Thread wasn't even supposed to be here today, so bring your own ball at 6:30

Did you know:

FLA is 3-4 in past seven games at New Jersey; won the last match 4-3 (OT) on February 4, 2011.

Panthers playoff chances:

Lost to NY Rangers 2-3 (OT), playoff odds down 0.3 to 85.2% via Sports Club Stats

On the table:

More Barch fallout, courtesy of the Globe/Shoalts....THN's Proteau not on the ShanWagon...Panthers still "have growing to do", via Spector/SN...the Community Rink Tour commences tomorrow at three locations around SoFla...Per TSN, Johan Hedberg will start for New Jersey tonight; he's 8-7-0-1 (2.71/.908) lifetime vs the Cats. Presumably our beloved xenomorph goes for FLA...CapGeek: center John Madden's contract garners (pro-rated?) $600,000 for 2011-12. And - zoinks - it's a two-way deal...Devils forward Patrik Elias will play his 1,000th NHL game tonight (all with NJ).

The Shoalts article is well thought out and a good read but it’s still wrong. I just can’t agree that the offense is worth the punishment. You can beat someone into a coma and only get five minutes. You can question the refs’ integrity and pay a fine. But asking someone who just fell on his tail if he slipped on a banana peel is a suspension just because the guy’s black, even though the league agrees with Barch that he didn’t mean it that way. I don’t buy it.

But the (nonsense) suspension has been served; I guess it’s time for me to let this one go. It’s just one more spin of the wheel of justice.

by jimmyh71 on Jan 6, 2012 11:26 AM EST reply actions

You know, I’d agree with you, but in watching the Animaniacs a long time ago – I really think the NHL just spun the wheel of morality.

by OldDave on Jan 6, 2012 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

The problem is, if they didn’t punish Barch here, they run the risk of others saying something racial and then claiming it wasn’t. They need to be consistent, and erring on the side of tryin to limit future instances, is better than doing nothing and setting a precedent.

Flames

despite their poor play the Flames are only 5 points out of the 8th spot. Too early to call it a season yet. so far only Columbus and Anaheim are truly out of it with a few more teams on the brink.

Just the basics of hockey skating and play, like a league for old noobs? I do well enough to not run over all the little kids at the iceplex when I go skating let alone hold a stick and play a game.

I’d recommend learning to skate first before doing the hockey classes. If you’re still trying to stay upright, you’ll have problems doing drills. All the local rinks have some kind of skating classes for adults.

I love it. It’s a Joss Whedon show and I think that’s more key than it being sci-fi. It’s also less traditional sci-fi than it is a western IN SPACE and it’s just generally great, probably the characters more than the plot, but great.

Last night was good to get the point. Quite a difference when 2 healthy NHL forwards come back. Makes you think what happens when everyone is healthy cause Florida can roll with the best already. Speaking of, 3 OT Heat victory in ATL was great. Couldn’t find the Thrashers banner in Philips Arena to see if they even bothered to acknowledge the past.

ATL sports teams are what you call good but never good enough. Florida and Miami are really fun to watch. I’m really glad the Heat stepped up the attitude to win when we signed the Big 3. Snowballed into the Panthers free agent extravaganza and even the Marlins spent money finally. Now if we can get the Miami Dolphins to stop being a collective mess.

Only extra bodies we have now is Madden and Ellerby. Bergenheim didn’t make the trip. Since Dineen hates to play 7 Dmen, I’m assuming that Madden will play tonight.

In a way, even though the D has been playing great, I wouldn’t be surprised if Dineen gives Ellerby a game tonight.

huge difference between the 2 situations. My feeling is if Columbus traded Nash right now with the team in such a sad state it would be a big FU to what they have left of a fan base. I think from a hockey standpoint they probably should trade him but I don’t think they will.

by Todd Little on Jan 6, 2012 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

Santorelli on the first line with Carter since the Nash/Carter thing didnt work out like they all expected, Ellerby getting play time with them which will help him develop into the 10th overall pick he is, Clemmensen because their goaltending is HORRIBLE, Drew Shore another solid young D-man who fell in our prospect rankings due to heavy drafts who will be ready within 2 years after college and a 1st rounder which could either end up being 14 or lower in the draft, if we fall out of a playoff spot which anything is possible.

No, lol, the Panthers still have him. But his OHL team traded him to the OHL team in Ottawa.

While Hemsky has never really developed into the player the Oilers had hoped, he’d fit in great on a second line for the Panthers. He would add some scoring depth, except he’s more of a playmaker and not a finisher. They need a finisher.

by MrOmnipotent on Jan 6, 2012 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

I think that a playmaker is needed on the second line because I think someone like Bergenheim or maybe even Santorelli can score when set up in the right way. What do you think we’d be giving up for him though?

by lipsonjeff on Jan 6, 2012 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

Bergenheim isn’t a scorer. People seem to think he’s this great scorer based on the playoffs last season, but he hasn’t been a scorer the rest of his career. He’s a career third liner, at best..

Edmonton would be looking to clear cap space, so maybe the right package of picks and prospects would work. Possibly Santorelli, but they’re going to want someone capable of playing top tix minutes and producing, which is where the prospects come in. So think a McFarland, Howden, or Bjustad, or combination of the two, as center pieces.

by MrOmnipotent on Jan 7, 2012 6:03 AM EST up reply actions

assets going to Edmonton would need to be reasonable as Hemsky is having an off season.

Interesting article on Hemsky. It seems the EDM organization has turned their back on him http://www.coppernblue.com/2011/12/29/2667527/ales-hemsky-ryan-whitney-and-preferential-media-treatment

I’m putting here for reflection later on in the season…. #14 Tomas [Fleischmann] is getting a 40G season. FLASH COUNT: 15G/19A

I always liked Hemsky and said one day I would get his jersey even if it did mean wearing an edmonton jersey… He’s basically tim connolly 2.0, has the ability to be a point per game guy has great passing ability and a sick shot. Injury bug needs to be given an antibiotic however

It said in the article that the Oilers are looking for a D-man. While I don’t want to get rid of him, maybe a swap of Ellerby for Hemsky? Only if Tallon doesn’t want a 7 man rotation. I would rather find someone else to trade though, Ellerby has potential.

…reading on to the comments though has a lot of people saying how Hemsky has a bad attitude, amonst other things. We don’t need a locker room cancer…..

If Tallon overlooked all the reasons not to get Hemsky, EDM would want someone like Kulikov or Garrison.

EDM has kinda publically trashed this guy, yet demands a kings ransom for him. No one has been willing to take a risk on him, yet.

Funny stat via Cap Geek: The #Panthers could (theoretically) acquire the entire #Predators roster, other than Shea Weber, for draft picks, at the deadline.

Preds won’t have Weber after the deadline anyway.

You think so? I would think that Ryan Suter would be the guy on the way out, if any of the two.

Depends entirely on the internal budget/cap.

Yea, I mean, I would think that Shea Weber is Nashville’s franchise player right now. And plus, he has a great beard.

It all depends on the budget. Theoretically, they have the cap space to resign both and Kostitsyn, and not blink. They’re a smart draftin team, and with talk of Radulov coming back (again, which never happens), you just don’t know. It really would break down to if, they want to stay in Nashville or don’t. I can see Suter wanting to stay, but Weber wanting to go someplace almost guaranteed to win.
