At home tomorrow vs Vancouver; the LBC Game Thread tells Benji we're his grandpa at 7
Did you know?
13 years ago today, the Cats and Nucks played to a 1-1 tie in Vancouver; Sean Burke was in net for FLA, stopping 23 shots.
On the table:
Scotty Bowman: "Of all the guys I ever coached, [Mikael Samuelsson] might have been the most upbeat, friendly person of all."...Great stuff from OTF regarding how coaches utilize their players...the Sunday Rumor Roundup via Spector...Mirtle explores why more Americans than ever before are breaking into the NHL...Sportsnet's Mark Spector (no relation to the above): "If there is a perfect system, then why have we not received the release from the NHLPA outlining it? We'd love to see a realignment that has no flaws, Donald [Fehr], but unions tend to spend more time spotting problems in the process than solving them."...THN's Kennedy thinks we should all relax before blowing up the Ducks...Still no word on David Booth, but Florida could be facing former prospect Mike Duco on Monday...Skille and Upshall were on practice ice this morning in non-contact sweaters.

Sorta OT: check out this video at the 0:40 second mark…specifically the hat on the kid behind HFD coach Paul Maurice. Keep in mind the game was in Montreal, and less than a year after COL/FLA squared off in the final.
Confused tot, I say.

Opinions of how our prospects did at the WJC? Thought Hubs was impressive especially coming off an injury, Howden good and was a little disappointed overall in Bjugstad. Thought the other guys acquitted themselves pretty well too.
Dont forget Donskoi and Kosov, two guys who didnt get much attention but both played well

Also, I was watching a bit of the UMass UVM game today and they mentioned Connor Brickley was their leading scorer. Sure enough, he has 8g/2A in 15 games. Too bad he was injured

ot but it’s a little quiet NHL wise today. Giants – Falcons turned out be a snooze fest. Tough day for Mike Smith, 0/2 on 4 and 1 calls in field goal range and left two timeouts on the board at the end of the first half with the Falcons moving the ball. Hopefully the Steelers and Broncos put on a better show.
Pretty sure that’s Fleischmann in the pic.
Lots of trade talk lately, guys like Getzlaf and Ryan keep getting mentioned. What about Antoine Vermette? He’s cost is low right now, wouldn’t take much more than Ellerby to get him I would think.
Come to think of it, I’m pretty sure you’re right.

Vermette does seem like a player Tallon would go after, the only problem he has a long, expensive contract to 14-15 @ 3.75 mil/year. Now the free agent frenzy has shown Tallon isnt afraid to rumble with those deals, but I’m not sure what CBJs plans are for him. His play this year doesnt constitute much more than any two of Santorelli/Ellerby/Clemmensen, but since Coloumbus is facing a rebuild I’d be surprised if they didnt want an upper round pick along with players, probably a 2nd rounder.

Garrioch/OTW Sun:
The Jackets are still trying to move C Antoine Vermette and the Oilers are willing to send RW Ales Hemsky packing as well. Both have been on the market all season.

Vermette has more SH points (1G, 1A) than PP points (1A). This from a supposed second-line center on the 25th-ranked power play unit.

Yeah, with lots of alright guys its hard to point to why theyve been so bad. Vermette has put up good numbers with mediocre teams up to now, but this season has been terrible for everyone.

The problem is that Columbus already has 8 centers who’ve played ~30 games and 9 defensemen who’ve been playing all year. They really have no need for either Ellerby or Santorelli, plus Tallon would never ship out that high of a pick.

He’s a low cost (for the trade, not for the contract) second liner with pretty good upside, exactly what we need. It’s not like we couldn’t lose a 2nd rounder plus something else with the prospect pool we have.
I know Versteeg is better than Vermette but Tallon has already shown a willingness to trade picks for the right players.
Agreed on the upside.
Litter Box Cats - Your tarp-free Florida Panthers Colossus
by Donny Rivette on Jan 8, 2012 7:45 PM EST up reply actions
Oh yeah, it depends on how the rest of the season goes for Columbus. If they do a Tallon style firesale like we did, the price might drop for Vermette. CBJ is pretty close to the cap ceiling, and if the prognosis isnt good for the owners, they might pressure Howson to trade guys.
And if anything, Vermette has more upside now than Versteeg did when we traded for him, so we’ll just have to see.

I ran into the vancouver canucks team today…chatted with booth for a bit. I still don’t like seeing him with another team. said he was just so shocked when he got traded. I’m almost glad he isn’t playing tomorrow night, i don’t want to see him at the BAC in the opposing lineup, it still doesn’t seem right! Also chatted with Chris Higgins for a bit. he is so friendly…said he REALLY enjoyed his time in fla..too bad we didn’t keep him. Looking forward to scoring many off of luongo!!

Litter Box Cats - Your tarp-free Florida Panthers Colossus
Yes but today not. Tebow distracted me with a killer TD throw in OT. Watching my hawks tonight vs. wings…I’ll be missing it next week though. I got the graphic novel for walking dead vol 1 for Christmas. Just finished reading War Z, great book – should make a good movie if Brad Pitt doesn’t mess it up.
