AHL: San Antonio Rampage Remain Winless On Road; Texas Stars Claim 3-0 Victory

Greg Fiume

Turnovers and lack of focus cost the Rampage another two points, as the silver and black are still looking for their first road win of the season.

No scoring in the first period with Jacob Markstrom, and Stars goaltender (and fellow Swede) Cristopher Nilstorp playing solid in net. The Stars held the advantage in shots 11-10 for the first 20, as both teams played a solid period of hockey. The second period however, would be a familiar feeling for the Rampage, where the team would get off to a solid start, only to fall of the tracks in the second.

The Stars took the lead and never looked back in the second, thanks to back-to-back goals from forward Matt Fraser. Fraser, who had another two goal night on Saturday, scored his 11th and 12th career goals against the Rampage. His first goal coming on the powerplay, and second off a Rampage turnover for his fourth and fifth goals of the season, respectively.

Stars forward Scott Glennie scored his first goal of the season, off another turnover, for the final goal of the game, which caused Rampage head coach, Chuck Weber, to pull Jacob Markstrom for a minute and 23 seconds (Dov Grumet-Morris took no shots). Stars held the advantage in shots 14-3.

The final period had a desperate Rampage team playing better hockey though it wasn't enough to get anything by Nilstorp, who had his first North American shutout. Stars finished the game with a 31-21 shot advantage. The Rampage have been outscored 19-5 on the road, and are win less on the road.

  • The best line for the Rampage tonight was the fourth line of Eric Selleck, Scott Timmins, and Justin Vaive. The line had a total of five shots; 3 from Selleck (second most on the team), 2 from Timmins.
  • Matt Fraser has scored 12 goals in 14 games against the Rampage. Fraser has scored 42 goals in 87 career AHL games (28% of his career goals have been against the Rampage).
  • The Stars had six penalties, and are the AHL's least penalized team. And they're the worst penalty killers in the AHL, and they killed all six Rampage powerplays.

Rampage play the division leading Charlotte Checkers today at 8:30 PM EST. Panthers general manager Dale Tallon and head coach Keven Dineen are expected to be in attendance.

ECHL Cincinnati Cyclones lost 4-3 to the Evansville IceMen; Garrett Wilson and Jonathan Hazen were the only Panthers prospects to score, both being credited with an assist.
