There must be some sort of contract that we had to sign with the NHL after our great start, stating that we had to spot the opposing team a goal in the first 5 minutes of a game, otherwise, we have to move to Quebec or Hamilton

Toronto and Buffalo will never allow a team into their territory. Copps has been around since the mid 80’s and no expansion team despite 9 new teams given out. Balsillie was willing to over pay by $100 million for the Yotes and still no. Toronto metro area may get a second team one day but it will have to be located outside of Leafs geographical boundary.

agree, but the fact is teams need to move sometimes. This happens in every league even the NFL.
I hope by some miracle the Yotes can be saved and Canada can get more teams via expansion. This has to be what the NHL wants too or they would not be fighting so hard for Phoenix.

Allen doesn’t seem to want an NHL team to share the Rose Garden with the Blazers much like Les Alexander doesn’t want hockey interfering with the Rockets in Houston. Those two guys seemed to sour on the idea of getting into the NHL some years ago.
It’s nice to throw cities out there but they have to have what Winnipeg had: Great ownership group, a new or close to new arena and people prepared to buy season tickets. With the current economy there are not many US cities that are honestly looking for NHL teams.

I’m sure the NHL likes Seattle but there is no ownership group (yet) no new arena in the works (yet) and a very unsuitable temporary home if the first two things I mentioned actually came about. You can’t just stick a team somewhere because it’s a nice city with a lot of people.

The situation was BAD. The ownership wanted to dump the team – no one wanted to buy them and even if they did they would have to be tenants of ASG one of the worst ownership groups in the history of sports. Only way the Thrashers could have been saved was for someone to come in and buy the Hawks and Thrash.

not only that the Thrashers were not tied to Phillips arena only the Hawks were. Easy to move them – no lease to get out of. Which is something people don’t think about when they talk about moving teams like the Jackets and Panthers two teams tied to their respective rinks.

I’ve got a buddy here from Hamilton who doesn’t actually care about hockey but regularly complains that they don’t have an NHL team.
I think Toronto will get a second team one day if the Leafs allow it but it will not be in Hamilton.
If the Coyotes move to QC I think this increases Toronto area chances of getting a second team. If not, QC and Seattle will be the frontrunners for potential expansion to 32. The Leafs are dead set against a second Toronto team. I can only see them getting on board if there is a huge expansion fee and no other place for the NHLto go.

SoI just got home and just watched the game on fast-forward to catch up. Stopped on the Guddy interview during the 2nd intermission and I must say, hearing him talk about his little bro’s cancer battle makes my crush on him grow. I feel like a cradle robber, but I freaking love that kid.
