Coming Up:
- Jose Theodore, Jason Garrison, and Brian Campbell are headlining what has been billed as the final Panthers LIVE! which kicks off at 7 this evening from Duffy's Sports Grill in Plantation, but get in there at 6 for the 2012 St. Baldrick's event featuring Erik Gudbranson and Mike Weaver taking a little off the top. Typically a standing-room crowd, so be early.

Sorry if the following offends some hockey fans in Washington, Florida, the Carolinas and the six or seven who remain in Atlanta, but there’s no polite way to put it. The National Hockey League’s Southleast – er, Southeast – Division just isn’t very good. It has been that way ever since the league adopted its current structure. The latest example of the mediocrity came last week, with the Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers flip-flopping for the divisional lead almost nightly.
More here. Has this mope even seen the current standings?

I know I don’t post often here, but I do follow everything. Been a big time panthers fan since the beginning when I was 9 years old.
Why does it seem like if some Canadian team loses, doesn’t make money, has to trade someone, or one of their players drops their slice of pie on the floor it is mainly because the Florida teams exist…
BTW…welcome, antb :)

This guy is a complete jackass. I guess he missed Tampa Bay and Carolina winning the Stanley Cup out of the “Southleast.”
I hope the Panthers maintain third and that Washington and Winnipeg knock Ottawa and Toronto out the playoffs. Shut up this kind of stupidity.

so, even without the division leader thing, the Panthers would be in 6th and still in a playoff position 1 point behind NJ
That’s my point.
From what I gather of the article, it reads like a pre-emptive attack should the magical Senators/Leafs/both fall out of contention. This wouldn’t even be a “story” if FLA wasn’t in the mix, as the Caps are shielded from such criticism.

I don’t necessarily disagree with his statement that the Southeast is the weakest division right now, because technically speaking he’s right. However, his reasoning is vapid. Teams like Florida and Atlanta have struggled so much because of poor ownership and management, not because they’re in Florida or Atlanta. It just so happens that there existed a division where poor management of teams like Florida, Atlanta and for a short time Tampa Bay all occurred in the same stretches of time to make the division full of weak teams. This could happen anywhere, to any team in any division.
The Northeast is not too far from being the division that only gets one team in. These things are cyclical calling the SE a blight on the NHL a little overboard.

The point totals for both the Pacific and Southeast are very similar, so i dont think its a lie to suggest that in the context of the article, that it too has to be considered a weak division, but you dont see the author complaining about it. Yes it has been a strong division in teh past, but you cant say that for the last few years
Yes you can.

Sure, liken it to taking a risk on Fleischmann or Bergenheim, those could have been total busts, like most of our signings could have been.
Regier has made so many buyout potential signings its hilarious. BUF sits in the basement with a grand total of 3 million worth of cap space. Look at these contracts.
Ville Leino, six years at 4.5 mil.
Robyn Regher was brought over this summer, 4 million for two more years.
Christian Ehrhoff? 10 years at 4 million.
Brad Boyes has done squat with 4 mil left for this year.
Tyler Myers better live up to his promise since he’ll be paid 5.5 mil for the next 8 years.
Buffalo was a perfectly competitive team before, their GM tries to put them over the top and look what happens. Besides two somewhat good prospects in Armia and Kassian, they dont have much in the pipeline.
What did the experts say? Oh Buffalo, theyre suddenly favorites to win the Cup, and boy that Dale Tallon guys sure is an idiot, seven million for Campbell?

Blame the owner, not the GM, because much of that spending was uncharacteristic for Regier. Or do you forget their losing Briere and Drury the same year?
by MrOmnipotent on Feb 14, 2012 8:10 PM EST up reply actions
It’s just typical. I don’t want to put everyone in the same boat, but I’m really fed up with Canadians wanting to be so closed off with “their” sport. What do they want? For nobody else in the world to enjoy going to a game? To go back to the Original 6? Wait, that wouldn’t work, they only had 2. How about having a CHL and AHL, and the winner of those two would compete for the cup. Actually, they just hate the Panthers because the Panthers came into the league the same year as the last Canadian team won the cup, so it’s Florida’s fault for all of their woes.
I know several Canadians who don’t hate on the panthers and several who are season ticket owners. Elitist are in all cultures, its just that most hockey media comes out of Canada. Being a Bengals fan in the NFL, I hear the same crap about cincy not deserving a team blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda and that all comes from talking heads in the states.

This guy is simply trying to generate page-views. Old Canadian journalism trick, page views down? Rip on the SE division.
Sez the guy whose hometown team is only in a playof spot because they’ve played more games than anyone else. As far as “embarrassment to the league”, the league can do that all on their own.
And for the record I’m glad the union blocked the horrid realignment plan. The new plan is (was?) intentioanlly cruel to Florida hockey with all those extra air miles.
I guess I might be in the minority but I really liked the new alignment, especially if they were going to a true final four NOT based on geography,
I still think they will switch it after next season.
117 days until Prometheus
They probably will. I just dislike that the Panthers and Lightning will have to fly over an entire division in order to play games against their own. For each two game swing an OTT or MON has to make through Florida, the ’Ning and the Panthers have to make a five-game swing up north. This puts the rivalries of the Atlantic (that the league is presumably trying to preserve) above the concept of fair play in my book.
Eh, it’s been done to death (sorry to re-hash it) and the only reason the union knocked it down was to prove that they could. I’m sure it’ll happen and that Yormark and co. are salivating at all those Canadian tourist dollars. I can’t blame them for that. No tarps when Toronto comes a-calling…
Canada’s real mad they haven’t won a cup in almost 20 years

The Wednesday no-TV thing
OTW isn’t broadcasting it either (only time this season for the Sens), so if you can’t get to the game itself you’re out of luck on video.
Unless, of course, the Panthers are politely asked to link the in-house video feed to the official website, since this game is kind of a big deal in the standings for those of us unable to attend…

the salaries on the team make it almost impossible to sell except at the draft. If Colombus does nothing at the trade deadline, then GM has no standing and not allowed to do anything or …new GM and the draft will be busy for Columbus in selling.
I have seen a lot of their fans trash NASH on the web. Very surprised, it is very difficult to find tlhat kind of a center in the NHL. I dont think they know how much other teams would love to have Nash on their team.

Is anyone getting the feeling that the Panthers are finally about to go on a REAL tear and pull away from the playoff bubble teams and the Southeast Division?
Ahahahahaha
You can pencil in a loss against Anaheim.
12-2-3 in last 17. No signs of slowing down. Scores nearly every time in the first 2 minutes. Unless they just don’t show up or we force them to a shootout, we’re done.
The only team right now more scary to face would be Detroit at home. And Anaheim outplayed them at home.

I hope so. This is going to be a big home stand. They can really take advantage of it and put themselves in great position or blow it like they have done in the past. At least they are in a better position to start off instead of fighting to get into the top 8.The way they reeled off three solid wins after that debacle in DC shows me this is a different Panther team.

Most recent pic on the NHL Facebook page, kinda funny.
Portzline estimates five or six teams could be interested in Carter, among them the Kings, Flames and, possibly, the Maple Leafs. He writes that if the Jackets were to make a deal with the Kings, part of the return package likely would be goaltender Jonathan Bernier. If Carter were to go to the Flames, the return could be defenseman Jay Bouwmeester.
If he could swing Carter to LA it would reunite him with Richards, along with Anze and others it’d be scary.. on top of that Columbus would get the goalie the badly need.. scary if they get Bernier and manage to turn it around, Edmonton would be on it’s way to 3 straight #1 overalls.. of course they’d be stupid and draft Nail.

Disaster. It will soon be 2003 in the DC area. I could get $5 seats any night to a caps game.
No one had heard of Ovechkin and everyone was worried about what to name the new baseball team and who would own them.
Yes, things are that bad in D.C. McPhee should be fired but wont be.
I don’t know about that. Worst case it’s a bad season which they can shake off next year – they have the talent.
Still a long way to go. They still have a good chance of at least passing Ottawa. Maybe they’ll have a crap regular season and make some noise in the playoffs instead of the other way around.
