Tuesday Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Open Forum
"You know, you [used to] go into Florida almost thinking you're going to get two points as a team before. I think now teams coming in know they're gonna have a tougher game than maybe in previous years. The fans definitely have been helping that and coming out and supporting."

Why last night rocked:
- SJ over WSH, 5-3; just another day on the farm for Sharks in D.C., now 16-1 vs Caps since '99. Panthers retain game in hand
- CAR over MTL, 5-3; Eric Staal: 4G/2A/+6 in last three games
Why last night jonesed:
- Graced we are by a third joneless day
Panthers Playoff Update:
- FLA did not play; playoff odds up 1.2% to 90.8 per Sports Club Stats
Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla:
Teams FLA (65P) needs to lose in bold...
- NJ (66P) at BUF, 7 p.m.; Devils: 8-3-2 in Buffalo since lockout
- OTW (64P) at TB, 7; Sens have won first two games, combined score of 8-3 (both in Ottawa)
- NYI at WPG (58P), 8:30; Isles defeated Jets with SO victory at Winnipeg, December 20
- TOR (62P) at CGY, 9; after losing previous four, Leafs beat Flames 3-2 (REG) in October
Next up for the Cats:
- Hosting Ottawa tomorrow; LBC Game Thread opens at 7
Did you know:
- Senators have won eight straight vs Florida in both locations, outscoring the Cats 32-16
Monday’s Organizational Transactions:
- G Jacob Markstrom (off IR) to AHL San Antonio
- G Brian Foster to ECHL Cincinnati from San Antonio

The last couple of games for the Cats and Caps means that now the Panthers have about a 50% shot at top of the division if they go .500 in points the rest of the way, and because of the way the 5-10 teams are bunched up, they still have about a 40% shot at one of the bottom playoff spots if Washington comes back. But they need more like .550-.600 to hit the same mark now. It’s crunch time for the Panthers, but even more so for the Capitals.

But we don’t have another Olesz, or a sucker in Bowman to take him if we did.
Hockey is a business, only we fans love it as a game.
Lotsa prospects and a first-round pick as well as some deadwood to fill the gap

We can speculate, even if it might not (probably won’t) happen. Who could we afford to give up to get him?
a first rounder, second rounder, howden, santorelli, robak.
i love howden, im going to love robak, but id give them up in a heartbeat without hesitation for rick nash… id give up anyone sans marky/huberdeau for rick nash.

like Todd said in the other post - no doubt Tallon has gathered all these draft picks in order to possibly trade some prospects….
i think your proposed deal is a little too much though…
by alterego6487 on Feb 14, 2012 11:50 AM EST up reply actions
a little too much? youre talking about a franchise player who has scored 40 goals, a first round, a top tier prospect, a top AHL D and a roster dump is possibly too little! thats just my opinion though.

well i meant too much for us to give up… but i agree, it might be what’s needed.

A first, a roster player, and a top prospect not named Huberdeau; remember FLA would be taking on an ENORMOUS salary and cap hit until 2018

I don’t know about that. Except for the Panthers finally getting pointed in the right direction (at least at the game 55 point) this year you are talking about two teams in non-traditional markets with a long stretch of losing in their respective histories. Depends on how he looks at the Panthers I suppose. Is he looking at the seemingly bright future with Tallon at the helm (like Campbell did) or the Panthers who have been just as woeful as the Jackets on and off the ice the last decade?

I think Tallon’s rep goes a long way into making this possible. Add the fact that we’re contending AND building at the same time, no cap space issues and could a package together that would work with Columbus. Here’s hoping.
Seeing Red since 1994.
it's not likely but it's concievable
Agreed. I think Tallon’s presence and results to date are really good draws. Most other teams he might want to play on would have to give up current pieces in order to fit him under the cap, so that enters his calculations.
Also no state income tax here. Ohio’s current state income tax is $9,280.77 + 5.925% of excess over $204,200. His paycheck just went up a lot just by changing addresses.
Finally, it’s February. Ask his wife where she wants him traded to: Detroit or Florida?
Plus he reportedly appreciates playing in a lower-visibility market (i.e. he can go about his life when not playing)
Litter Box Cats - Your tarp-free Florida Panthers Colossus
by Donny Rivette on Feb 14, 2012 12:17 PM EST up reply actions
The state income tax factor has been proven to have no influence on the decisions these players make. People said the same about Luongo and countless others through the history of the Panthers and Lightning.

He’ll move. He’s said he won’t ask for a trade, but he’s open to a request from the team. At this point, one has to think he’ll go to most contenders. Apparently the Rangers are quite interested.

There is no doubt that we have the parts to get this done. I didn’t post this but a while back there was a Blue Jackets scout seated in the seat directly below me. He was taking notes in great detail on all our players as the game went on.
You would have to think that the Blue Jackets knew this was coming but prolonged it as long as possible.

From the just incredible department
Tiger Woods has committed to playing in the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens next month. The last time he played there was 1993 as an amateur.
What’s next? The Florida Panthers make the playoffs this year.
I see Washington making the move if there is one to be made. They may be in a bit of panic mode right now and may be willing to work a package that may include first rounders (notice the plural), roster player and perhaps Holtby

I don’t think Vokoun is worth much. Columbus isn’t likely to make the playoffs and Vokie’s a UFA in July.
Washington does have two first rounders (one is from Colorado, IIRC)
Columbus can't make the playoffs
Maybe it is still mathematically possible, but when’s the last time 90 pts was good enough for 8th in a conference? That is the maxmum for the team who has 38 points now and 26 games left on the season.
Maybe it is still mathematically possible, but when’s the last time 90 pts was good enough for 8th in a conference?
2009-2010 in the Eastern Conference. 2008-2009 in the Western Conference.
The chances against them even making it to 80 right now, though, are not good.

isn’t very likely. They’d have to get 32 out of a potential 52 points to make it.
Come to think of it, the way CBJ is plying 60 points might be tough for them.

Vokoun is an unrestricted free agent in July and Columbus isn’t making the playoffs this season. Why bother getting a top tier goalie when he’s going to play a few months’s worth of meaningless games and you’re just going to lose him? He’s not going to want to stay in Columbus and come 12:01AM on July 1 his new agent will be listening carefully.
And coming to Florida
and asking if the June 2011 offer was still good?
Maybe in some star trek alternate universe……..
not only is he a UFA he is at the tail end of his career not what CBJ is looking for imho.

He’s so advanced he’s in the future and has counted the two new expansion teams in Hamilton and Quebec.
You all misread what was said. He listed a few of the total 28 teams that won’t be in on the trade, as it’ll only be Columbus and Toronto in on the deal. 30 teams minus the HIs team and Nash’s team equals 28 other teams in the league not in on this deal.

using Capgeek...
The Rangers have 1.5M in cap space remaining. They’d have to free up 6.2M to take Nash, but the fat targets are players Columbus might not want in return. I think CBJ is going to want a prospect/pick-heavy package.
There are only 11 teams (the Panthers are one of them) that can trade for Nash without any cap problems. All other teams will have to shuffle deck chairs a bit. The actual money would be a problem for the cats, but not the cap.
pretty sure the caps hits by the time the deadline rolls around is different then what’s listed on capgeek.. Nash may only have a cap hit of like 2-3mil by that time in which case all they need to do is bury yet another player in the ahl like theyre notorious for.
Like I said I dont want it to happen, but it could. and next season theyll have some people off the books to make more room

Wile guess of the day: Nash to the Blues. The Blues have the cap space without losing anyone, they are poised for a run, and they have a hot goalie prospect (Ben Bishop) that they have no room for. If CBJ gets Bishop and plays him enough this season, he’s an RFA and they can keep his rights. Of course the Blues would have to throw picks/prospects/players in but it seems more do-able than Nash to NYR / PHY / TOR / VAN.
I’m going to guess Nash goes to L.A. if it happens at the deadline.
My feeling is he won’t get moved until this summer.
115 days until Prometheus
Bernier and stoll would be in some form of package if they want to land nash, stoll will be an UFA but can chip in 20 goals. maybe throw in williams to shed some more cash as well as a 1st.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Feb 14, 2012 4:23 PM EST up reply actions
I see Columbus being in a position to get a little better than that. I don’t think they would be interested in taking back UFA’s who would likely have no interest in resigning unless it was to free up space for their trading partner but why should they be so accommodating especially in what looks to be pretty quiet year for potential deadline deals.. They need to use Nash to get better. I think the asking price is going to be two players who are under contract past this season who can play and be good in Columbus right away and onwards as well as a #1 pick and a prospect.
115 days until Prometheus
IN the Jackets from of mind, right now they might be willing to eat cap space to get rid of Carter, but for Nash they’re gonna want a bounty of rewards to end the relationship.

Thanks for the Newfoundland props Donny!
As an aside, the Gander airport is actually an alternate runway for the Space Shuttle, and Newfoundland has all 4 of Canada’s alternate runways for the Shuttle landing.
Presumably they’ll be ripping them up soon seeing as we have no manned spaceflight program for the first time since 1981.

Todays a slow day.. (I hate Tuesdays)
So i’ve randomly thought up a trade scenario that could help a few teams out and I’m sure will get a lot of fire..
Columbus receives:
Alex Salak
Mike Santorelli
Keaton Ellerby
Michael Frolik
Floridas 2012 1st round pick.
Chicago receives:
James Wisniewski
Shawn Matthias
Florida recieves:
Rick Nash
Columbus would receive assets that will help them build a good young core as well as potential goals to make up for the loss of Nash and a 1st rounder that any big name player should command in a trade. Along with the great skilled young goalie they desperately need.
Chicago gets a good puck moving defenseman they’ve been lacking (yes I know he was with Chicago once before) granted he’s having a not so great season, the same can be said for the rest of Columbus. They also get a decent young centerman they badly need as they lack any type of depth at center.
Florida finally gets it’s finisher that can help in those big one goal games and potentially lead to fewer games that end up going to OT or shootout. with Nash in our lineup easily take away 5 of those OTL and we’d be at 70 points tied with Boston.
flash – weiss – nash
kopecky – goc – steeger
begenheim – madden – sammy
bradley – matsumoto – skille
yeah I through matsumoto in there for fun lol, skille can always switch to center on that line and throw barch on the wing
by Rob PKane McMahon on Feb 14, 2012 6:21 PM EST reply actions
of course theres always upshall too..
by Rob PKane McMahon on Feb 14, 2012 6:26 PM EST up reply actions
Lol, CBJ gets rid of Nash and Wisniewski , and get a bunch of crap back in return? Salak is far from a sure thing like Bernier/Schneider, whom CBJ can easily fetch for nash. Santorelli in just a body to fill space, Frolik is a bust, and has a ceiling of 20 goals, and a 1st is a 1st. So for all of that, they lose a 30-40 goal scorer and a great D man?
And how would CHI get matthias too if all they are giving up is Salak and Frolik??
sorry I forgot Ellerby, but they overall get a potential 2nd pairing D man while they lose a first pairing young D man, get a 15-25 goal scorer and a 10-20 goal scorer and lose a 30-40 goal scorer, and get a B goalie prospect and a mid-to late 1st round pick to make up for the difference?
I know you can do better than this Rob :)
I actually forgot to change this up, I meant to throw in a prospect instead of santorelli, such as drew shore or possibly howden.
as i stated last night, theres a reason tallon drafted 23 guys in 2 yrs and its not to hold on to each and every one of them.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Feb 14, 2012 7:14 PM EST up reply actions
I am not willing to give up Matthias. Granted, I have a tendency to feel irrational connections to the name on the back of the jersey just as much, if not more, than the front of the jersey. After all, I am the girl that bought Center Ice the night Booth was traded so I can watch him in Vancouver…although I still refuse to believe my love for him was, or still is, irrational. But I cannot part with Matthias, or Ellerby for that matter. However, I can get behind a trade with Santorelli, Madden, or Upshall. But leave my Danger alone!
Tweet me! @srgrossman
if every GM went by this nobody would ever get traded.. sign elsewhere.. and no ‘bad’ club would ever improve until the clubs that are good have players die off of old age and they start the draft process all over again.. sorry but i dont want my club to be bad for 20 years just because someone has a connection to a player and isnt willing to see him go elsewhere if it means their team getting better..
For example, I LOVE versteeg.. would i trade him if it meant we get a damn good player that will play great for our team for years helping us be a contender? I’d do it twice.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Feb 14, 2012 7:40 PM EST up reply actions
This is why I’m not a GM. I, admittedly, cannot separate emotions from business. Every player I have loved has been traded, and every time it feels like a punch in the gut. I am not meant to have any business with the business side of this business.

I admit it, I do have a Nash T-Shirt from NHL.com
I would be happy if Florida trades for him. He represents everything that the ownership and marketing were looking for. They must be working those phones right now. Panthers obtain A name recognition player to fill seats. Got to think that Tallon has a green light on this one. My bet on cost is Mr. Petrovic, first and second rounder for Nash. Which is the equivalent of 2 first rounders plus a low second rounder. This is a doable and good deal for jackets. A big dman with two draft picks. Panthers get what they wanted since day one. I worry about the cap space if too much for ownership but they should go for it. Enough assets I pull this deal off , just need to convince Nash.
Other likely destinations for Mr. Nash are Philly and Hawks.
PS too much attitude already in DC for the caps to pull it off.

This is what he might want, but no team is going to give up a package like that. Stars are always traded for less then they are actually worth.
trade for
Mike Richards: LAs top prospect Brayden Schenn and a promising 23 year old,20 goal type in Wayne Simmonds, plus a second rounder.
Jeff Carter: A lottery 1st round pick which turns out to be Sean Couturier, a little less promising but still young 22 year old Jakub Voracek, and a third round pick. And a decade of salary off the books.
That was Jeff Carter and Mike Richards, two locker room disease players on a stacked team more with ample offense to replace the loss with. We’re talking about a the captain of a team that has never been relevant, and won’t be relevant even with Nash and Carter on the top line. Its not working for them.
If Howson really wants to trade away his franchise player, he’ll be admitting defeat on all the things he tried to do to help his team this offseason, alienate the paltry fan base and have to commit to completely rebuilding his team. Trading Nash is the last thing he wants to do, and the only thing he will accept is an overpayment, since other teams are so eager to Nash off his hands.
Think second coming of the Kessel trade.

With the position he is in, I dont think he is going to ream any team like the B’s GM did to Burke. The bruins didnt have to trade Kessel, he was extremely young. Nash is a completely different situation
Same situation. If Howson proves (for once) he isnt an idiot, he can rail another GM eager and stupid enough to bite. Which is why I find it perplexing that Leafs fans want Nash so much, considering they dont have the depth to make up for another big trade and Burke is far from being the ‘best trading GM’ they make him out to be.

I think Columbus will be looking for youngish NHL roster players who can come in and play. Something like Bernier, Jack Johnson and a #1 from the Kings or a similar package with Schneider as the centerpiece from Vancouver. Trading Nash for a package of picks would be a bad idea for Columbus especially if you are dealing with a good team and will not be getting lottery picks back. My feeling is they are going to want to be as certain as possible in the return and not want all picks or a group of prospects who may or may not make it.
115 days until Prometheus
Only ones I care about are Huberdeau/Markstrom/Bjugstad. (We need him at center!!!)
I would love to see Shore dealt… as well as Petrovic after two good years… with Robak and Ellerby, we really dont need Petrovic

Read again why Florida is ranked first. Its the depth of prospects. Most aren’t envisioned to ever see NHL ice, and that includes Grimaldi with his 8.0 D ranking. D as in
D – Unlikely to reach potential, could drop 3 ratings – a player who has a chance to reach his potential but is unlikely to do so. The potential rating is multiplied by 70 percent for depth chart purposes, indicating that the player’s potential is extremely fluid.

The sick part of this is there are a lot of LBC community members in northern Palm Beach, Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties who now have to find other things to focus their attention on…and it ain’t gonna be the Broons/Habs on NBC-SP. If they even receive it.

Rather strange, since activating an entire broadcast team of producers, on-air talent, sound peeps, et al – plus equipment – on a moment’s notice might be cost-prohibitive, especially for a game in South Florida. Unless we’re not being given the full story… ;)

Ottawa isn’t sending a broadcast team supposedly. Meaning, there isn’t a Ottawa feed for the people in Ottawa.
