Wednesday Caterwaul: Panthers Gameday Open Forum
Eight: that's the number of times Florida has collected more than one power play goal in a game, the last occasion coming way back on December 27 in a 5-3 victory over Toronto. Five days earlier the Panthers scored twice on the man advantage - and surrendered an equal amount - in an overtime loss to Ottawa, tonight's opponent.

Why last night rocked:
- NYI over WPG, 3-1; First home loss for Jets since January 21
- CGY over TOR, 5-1; Leafs: 5 goals last four games
Why last night jonesed:
- OTW over TB, 4-0; Spezza nezza three, adds assist as Andy stops 28
- NJ over BUF, 4-1; Kovalchuk, um, nezza three as well, adds assist as Marty stops 29
Panthers Playoff Update:
- FLA did not play; playoff odds up 1.6 to 91.2% per Sports Club Stats
Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla, beyond the obvious:
Teams FLA needs to lose in bold…
- ANH at PIT, 7 p.m.; Pens winners of 6 straight at home
- TOR at EDM, 10; Oilers 5-1 over past six in Edmonton
Next up for the Cats:
- Back at home this evening for the first of four, as old pal - and presumed starter - Craig Anderson lugs his 6-0-1 lifetime record vs Florida into Sunrise. Local blackout or not, LBC Game Thread rocks on in brilliant MollerVision at 7. Until then check out Silver Seven for a peek into SensLand.
Did you know:
- Florida's last home victory vs Ottawa came on March 31, 2009. Michael Frolik scored 3 points (1G), Anderson stopped 30 shots in the 5-2 win.
Tuesday’s Organizational News:
- D Jason Garrison given 7-10 day span for recovery (foot?)
Today's Updates:
- D Tyson Strachan signs one year contract extension (club release)

OnFrozenPond #FlaPanthers D Tyson Strachan gets a ONE WAY deal for 2012-13; obviously excited. It’s his first.
I know its for next year, but with everyone healthy whos spot in the lineup is he going to take? I hope this doesnt mean the end for Ellerby because you’d have to figure you’d pencil Strachan in for the 7th dman spot
Also makes Strachan easier to move, if that’s an option they’d wish to pursue

No reason for him to walk away from 2nd or 3rd years of the deal…a LOT of coin to give up. I predicted long ago that he bails in the fourth.

definitely food for thought
can’t see them parting with either unless they are making a big move at the deadline.
maybe Ellerby gets moved in some kind of minor deal for a forward?

I can’t outright call it a bad move (although I want to) by Tallon as they needed to get to the cap floor but there had to be a better way than this Jovo deal. Maybe he’ll retire sooner than four years or maybe they made the deal with an eye towards getting an amnesty buyout in the new cba

Friedman/CBC on Nash
Sometimes, I think people just like to screw with our heads. One thing is for certain, the news getting out is a bad thing for both the Columbus Blue Jackets and Rick Nash. For Nash, who does not like attention, this is torture. A deal like this screams for discretion. Now it’s going to hang over their heads like a monsoon cloud.

good article. same line of thinking I posted in yesterday’s caterwaul. Columbus is going to be trading Nash for players that can step in play with a pick and prospect thrown in. They can’t settle for just picks or picks and prospects that may or may not work out,

That's an understatement
If Florida wins tonight and beats Wash in regulation Friday, Florida will be on top of the SE division by 8 pts.
Of course we have to forget that FL hasn’t beaten the Senators in 2 years and haven’t won 5 games in a row in an even longer stretch of time.

a 6 point cushion would be big going into the Washington game. gives them a nice little buffer if they lose and like you said an 8 point lead if they win (which would be huge and hard to overcome)

I think that with the strachan signing we’re going to see ellerby and/or robak go. And if I had to choose one of either kulikov or garrison, I’d probably say kuli is the one to go, as he’s the more attractive trade asset for a top flight forward and with someone like robak coming up the system, he may be replaceable
by lipsonjeff on Feb 15, 2012 12:45 PM EST via mobile reply actions
If anything, the Strachan signing is just giving Tallon more options. If Garry leaves, Jovo retires or whatever, we have another solid defensive defenseman in place. Ellerby is a UFA/RFA too, but I think he’ll get a 2 way and be used as an injury callup. I dont see anything in Robaks future with this team.

He doesn’t have much choice, but my hope is that if they’re looking to use him as a call-up, they trade him instead. I don’t think he clears waivers. He would’ve been in the A before now if they’d thought he would, because if they’re going to pay him that kind of money to sit in the press box, they might as well be getting some use out of him in San Antonio.
I wouldn’t go that far. With potential moves to be made at the deadline and in the off season Ellerby could very well end up as a regular on the Panther blue line next season. The forward corps is still a work in progress so maybe the Panthers are stocking up on D to move some of the glut for a new forward or two in the off season.

and do not forget, they are very very high on alex petrovic who is having a solid season in red deer. they seem to value him quite highly, saying in camp he is right on par with gudbranson…and his entry level deal is ready to go when he is. seems the writing is on the wall, either kulikov or garrison will not be back. but both could bring nice value in the next two weeks….this should be fun.

THN's Kennedy has some fun (I think) with Nash situation
The most intriguing scenario is Florida, though there is the matter of whether Nash would waive his no-trade clause to go there. The Panthers are a playoff team right now and if Nash doesn’t like the glaring spotlight that comes with playing in a major northeastern city, Florida is the perfect foil.
The Cats also have oodles of goodies in their cupboard. I’d ask for Jonathan Huberdeau and Jacob Markstrom right off the bat and hang up the phone at the slightest indication of dithering. From there, one more prospect – either physical University of Vermont center Connor Brickley or two-way left winger Quinton Howden of Moose Jaw. A steep price to be sure, but the Cats lose nothing off their immediate roster and have one of the best pipelines in the NHL, so they can take the hit – plus the Panthers have the cap space.
Rest of the post here

Litter Box Cats - Your tarp-free Florida Panthers Colossus
by Donny Rivette on Feb 15, 2012 5:31 PM EST up reply actions
Very. I can see Tallon giving up one maybe two prospects but not huberdeau markstrom and those likes.. It’d be more of Howden, Shore, possibly petrovic, Grimaldi etc.. all young guys who have up side that would fit into any “rebuild”. And Yes I know they have time until theyre in the NHL due to college commitments etc but any good rebuild wouldn’t throw them directly into the NHL anyway. couple that with someone like Matthias, sure he’s played good this year and came into his game somewhat but he’s still a question mark, the good play of late though took his value back up.. maybe a defenseman either garrison or ellerby now that we know the kracken has his new contract. and of course the all important first rounder.
Im not saying to give all of this up, but in some form of package sure it could work.
Yes I know Nash is good, Ive followed him forever and always hated we traded down instead of drafting him I know what a GM might demand for him in a trade, that doesn’t mean he’ll get it though and sure he doesnt have to trade him it’s just looking at options.. but for a rebuild you have to think Tallon is the one guy in the NHL with the tools to help supply it without giving up the main pieces of his own rebuild.
This deal is very similar to the things Tallon did in Chicago, draft heavy.. make a deal.. sign a free agent, make it to the conference finals.. it could happen again
by Rob PKane McMahon on Feb 15, 2012 5:37 PM EST up reply actions
Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reported that Nash has submitted a list of teams to the Blue Jackets to which he would accept a deal, and his sources say the list is no more than 10 clubs. Portzline also wrote, “Among the clubs believed to be interested are the New York Rangers, Los Angeles, San Jose, Toronto and Montreal.”
Of course they’re interested.. they’re horrible.
by Rob PKane McMahon on Feb 15, 2012 5:45 PM EST up reply actions
seems fair..
Larry Brooks of the New York Post reported the Rangers have had preliminary talks with the Blue Jackets about Nash, but a source deemed it a longshot. Brooks reported the “opening asking price” was Brandon Dubinsky, Chris Kreider and a first-round pick, but also said “it would be hard to believe” that Columbus GM Scott Howson wouldn’t want Derek Stepan and/or Ryan McDonagh in a deal.
About the same as Matthias, Howden and a 1st.

Yes, a two time 20 goal scorer, four time 40 point producer is about the same as a player who has never approached either benchmark. NY’s top prospect, rated by your fav Hockey’s Future as their 27th best prospect, is the same as a guy not even on the radar of top 50. Mathias alone in the offer alone would make Howson hang up.

There’s no way he ends up on any Canadian team.. that’s me being realistic on this one, I don’t see any of them as having the assets to trade for him along with being a ‘contender’ or ‘better team’
Vancouver may be the only team that fits that but I don’t think they have the value to trade. Boston isn’t getting him, they’re on a slide right now but they won’t shake their roster up that much, same with NYR.. Detroit? Maybe but even then I don’t see them changing their 21 straight victory lineup that much.
Realistic places to land? Possibly Chicago? and LA.
small chances for him to go to? Pittsburgh, Nashville (Dont think Columbus will want to feed a great player to them) Florida, and believe it or not I’m gonna throw a wildcard out and say NYI.. they’re pushing for a playoff spot and have some young talent as well as a goalie to possibly give up in Montoya. Moulson etc..
