Does Strachan deal signify major move on horizon for Panthers blueline?

The Florida Panthers signed defenseman Tyson Strachan - recent scorer of his first NHL goal in 75 career games - to a one-year, one-way contract extension on Wednesday. He's the prototypical solid-if-unspectacular blueliner whose had some offensive success in the AHL since being drafted in the fifth round in '03 by Carolina. Several stints with St. Louis gave him the lion's share of his big league experience, making him an attractive enough option for the Panthers when they signed him to a one-year deal in June. The thinking was obviously geared toward the opportunity he'd receive with San Antonio, and he delivered: 12 points (3G) and a plus-5 in 32 games with the Rampage.

Star-divide

As injuries began to pile up on Florida's backend in recent weeks, Strachan was recalled on December 30, providing 3 points (1G) in eight games for the Cats with mostly limited minutes. Congrats and all to the guy on securing a somewhat surprising re-enlistment after a rather short audition. Why the "surprise" aspect? Because the Panthers have a pretty significant decision to make regarding their defensive corps heading into the final days before the trading deadline.

Forgetting injuries - and both are expected back soon - Florida has nine blueliners available: Brian Campbell, Keaton Ellerby, Jason Garrison, Erik Gudbranson, Ed Jovanovski (IR), Dmitry Kulikov (IR), Colby Robak, Strachan, and Mike Weaver.

Robak will be returned to San Antonio upon Jovo's arrival, and presumably Strachan follows when Kuli hits the roster. An Ellerby reassignment pares the list down to coach Dineen's Original Six of Campbell, Garrison, Gudbranson, Jovanovski, Kulikov, and Weaver.

Back to that "significant decision"...

GP G A P +/- PIM PPG SHG GWG GTG SOG PCT
2011 - Dmitry Kulikov 46 4 20 24 -5 28 2 0 1 80

Kulikov, 21, is already in his third pro season, with RFA status looming. See those numbers up there? Compare them to his stats from a year ago: 6-20-26. In 72 games. That's ridiculous improvement at such a young age. He can be streaky, but when his confidence is high he's a ball to watch.

GP G A P +/- PIM PPG SHG GWG GTG SOG PCT
2011 - Jason Garrison 54 13 10 23 6 14 8 0 2 113

Having a similar breakout season Garrison, 27, has smashed his previous highs in every category, due in large part to a rocket from the point, though clubs have countered his act effectively of late; he's collected 5 points (2G) in his past 15 contests before a foot(?) injury. A UFA in July, Florida's lowest-paid blueliner will be seeking a major raise.

Are both in the plans? Can they possibly be? Each is due a significant bump in pay, obviously, though Kuli will be cheaper in the short-term. Garrison is older and steadier, but is management ready to reward an admittedly killer single-season performance - which has slowed of late - with dollars and term which could become a tremendous stumbling block to contracts for a few of the organization's A-1 prospects down the road? Not to mention any UFA forwards they may wish to pursue...

Subtract one of these guys and Strachan has a legitimate role with the big club next year, depending upon what is done with soon-to-be RFA Ellerby. With a one-way deal, management is (very transparently) going to make the space to accommodate him. And Dineen doesn't dress seven defensemen.

The reality breaks down to this: do you sacrifice Kris Versteeg (himself an RFA deserving of a ginormous new deal) for Jason Garrison? Hint - Steeger's going nowhere, and quite probably neither is Kuli.

I don’t see Tallon doing it; made a commitment to a respected league veteran to join his former club – on the rise – and can’t believe he’d back out this early. Lack of class.

Idk, Donny. That buyout is one hell of a deal. They’re giving up VERY little to buy him out. Btw, I think you should add a pole in here with who everyone would be more comfortable parting ways with, Kuli or Garry

They’re giving up good will if they buy him out, honestly, and that’s not how Tallon rolls. Part of the point of Jovo is PR and it’s been successful to at least some degree.

also—Jovo was Gudbranson’s idol as a child. playing with him on his original team is gonna be fantastic towards Guds’ growth as a player and as an individual.

Donny’s right, he wont be bought out unless he retires or something. It would leave a bad taste in the air.

I definitely don’t have quite the attachment to him that others here do, because I’m younger and don’t remember him really from his days as a Cat. That’s why I feel like I’m more of a fair judge in some sense, because I only look at his hockey from this season, and I personally believe he’s been a hindrance on the backend, and his lack of speed and mobility has led to multiple goals pinned directly to him.

by lipsonjeff on Feb 15, 2012 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

No way Huberdeau is on the 4th line and don’t think the team wants Howden (the most NHL ready prospect) in the AHL.

by Alexander Calloway on Feb 15, 2012 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

Disagree there. Although he is NHL ready, Tallon doesn’t give a damn about letting him get acquainted to the professional game with a year in the minors. Exhibit A: Jacob Markstrom.

by lipsonjeff on Feb 15, 2012 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

Markstrom isn’t NHL, at least starting wise. Howden is, hence why it took the team so long to send him back.

by Alexander Calloway on Feb 15, 2012 2:30 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree. If it weren’t for Clemmonson having his contract go through this season, I think we would’ve seen Markstrom with the big club all season long with no questions asked.

Oops, there’s an exception for some recalled players. If they’re on recall and have less than 10 games/30 days on the roster they can be sent back to the minor leagues while injured. So they must have kept him until it was going to be 30 days and then they sent him back. But such players do get their full NHL salary until cleared to play.

There’s probably some provision in the CHL-NHL agreement as well, but I’d be surprised if it was much different than the above.

The Strachan signing comes completely out of left field. There is simply nothing out there that warrants this contract unless someone else is on the way out. I feel a team ot teams have reached out to Florida regarding one of our D men…and lets face it, I think we can all agree no one is beating down the door for Ellerby. Garry or Kuli will not be here two weeks from now. A lot of teams are looking for D help and if it can bring a legitimate top six forward or package deal for a stud, then I too would make a move. Still have petrovic in red deer coming up through the system as well. There is plenty of depth.

by madcat78 on Feb 15, 2012 2:11 PM EST reply actions

I think that if we’re talking trying to get something here, we might see Kuli or Garry traded at the deadline for a very serviceable forward (top 6 quality). It’s unfortunate but at least we know we have Robak and Petrovic coming up through the ranks. We might even see Garrison, Ellerby, a forward, and a prospect/pick traded for an impact player.

by lipsonjeff on Feb 15, 2012 2:12 PM EST reply actions

You guys are killing me. I am so glad I am not a GM or the assistant, I could not stand to do THIS part of the work. I don’t want to part with any of the current D guys. I can’t disagree with Alex though, Garrison’s stellar season is in part to Soupy making it happen. Do you really think that his Agent would demand a ransom in pay or would he take a fair pay raise to stay?

So what would our pairings look like next year?

Campbell-Kulikov
Weaver-Gudbranson
Jovo-Strachan

Garrison
Ellerby
Robak

Possibilities

1. Garrison’s asking for too much money and they’re maybe thinking deadline trade if they can’t sign him.
2. Other clubs are inquiring about Kulikov and they’ve been happy enough with the defense with him out to think about it.
3. They’re liking Strachan more than Ellerby right now and thinking they’re going to cut Ellerby loose and keep Strachan as the seventh defenseman next season.
4. They’re loading up on guys they like and making 9 or 10 defensemen compete for 7 spots next year. Whomever doesn’t make it gets waived and sent down. (The 10 being: Campbell, Garrison, Jovo, Weaver, Kulikov, Gudbranson, Ellerby, Strachan, Robak & Petrovic).

I’d be surprised if they trade Kulikov. He’s still young, and I think he and Petrovic may make a good pairing in a couple of years. And they’re not buying out Jovanovski. He’s here as a mentor to guys like Gudbranson as much as for what he does on the ice. Eventually he’s going to get fewer minutes and go to a bottom-six/power play guy like Chris Chelios late in his career, but he’s not going anywhere.

ESPN is talking about how the Hawks are looking for a top-4 Dman and forward depth. Can anyone see a Garrison and Santorelli and maybe even Ellerby trade for a Patrick Sharp kind of player? Also considering Tallon’s relationship and history dealing with Chi-town.

I think Santorelli is a pretty serviceable bottom-6 forward, and although Garrison is having an uncharacteristically good season, he’s still been playing top-4 minutes for us the past few seasons. Throw in a nice prospect or nice pick in there, I think the deal is sweet enough for a top 6 guy.

by lipsonjeff on Feb 15, 2012 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t see why the Panthers would make the deal. There’s no one on this team that can generate offense on a Toews or Kane level.

by Alexander Calloway on Feb 15, 2012 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Remember, Santorelli is only a year removed from 20 goals. Personally, I think he’s been playing not 100% all season.

one of two things...

my guess is either garrison is asking too much just because he’s scoring some goals, if he’s asking for more than what he’s worth perhaps theyll trade him. but i think this may signal an ellerby trade, and then strachan would take the role as the 7th dman for next season. if we make a deadline trade i think it would either be ellerby and/or santorelli involved considering that garrison and jovo should be back just before the deadline (and kulikov is already off his crutches and hopefully will get back to skating sometime this week).

by frolikfan67 on Feb 15, 2012 3:34 PM EST reply actions

Ellerby if a minor move is made (I agree with you that is most likely the case) – Garrison if something juicier is afoot.

by Todd Little on Feb 15, 2012 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

To be honest, I’m not sure what to think here. Unlike many of you, I really like ellerby and would NOT trade him under any circumstances. Why trade a young and already very good D-man? No, thanks.

I’m not sure what to think of this. Strachan has been good, but nothing that I like better than Ellerby.

Campbell, Gudbranson, Ellerby and Kulikov are my personal untouchables in D. The rest can be moved, even though Garrison and Weaver would hurt.

by Weezheat on Feb 15, 2012 3:56 PM EST reply actions

I like Ellerby but they have a glut of defensemen for next season so you’d think someone has got to go. Who knows what’s going to happen. with the trading deadline coming and changes next off season I wouldn’t hazard a guess a what the Panther lineup is going to look like.

A lil thunder and a lil lightning is what the Cats are going to bring this year.

by trinidaddy on Feb 15, 2012 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

i like ellerby too but theres no way he’s an untouchable, the only ones who are would be campbell, kulikov, and gudbranson, those are the core guys that we will build our D around for a long time (unless of course we got some superstar forward that you just couldnt say no to, but for the most part we wont shop any of those guys and will take a lotttt to move any of them). i would like to resign garrison, but to something reasonable. jovo is pretty much stuck here considering his contract and age, but i would trade him if i could (makes too much and is under contract for too long). and weaver is great, love the guy, veryyy important to our D at the moment and under contract for the next 2 seasons at just 1.1per? thats incredible and would have no interest moving him, especially no team will give us whats he’s worth, hes very underrated.
in other words, campbell, kulikov, and gudbranson are the untouchables. i would like to resign garrison if he’s not asking for something too much (if hes asking for over 4 id trade him, we already have a lot invested in campbell, jovo is making a good amount, guds from his bonuses, kulikov will get a good contract, we can only pay so much for him.) . keep weaver, no reason to get rid of him, cheap, great player, and will never get the return we deserve for him. but i would move jovo if i could, but he’s stuck here most likely.

by frolikfan67 on Feb 15, 2012 4:22 PM EST reply actions

I personally dont’ see Guds as being untouchable. The way Mike Santos speaks as Petrovic and Gubs being at the same level raises a bit of uncertainity in that regards. He would make a great trading piece though.

A lil thunder and a lil lightning is what the Cats are going to bring this year.

by trinidaddy on Feb 15, 2012 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

Now we need to trade Garrison while his stock is still high. I actually like Strachan more than Garrison given the money that Garrison is going to demand. Garrison is just too one dimensional. What else does he do well other than shoot? We should be able to get a decent forward for him given what little attention other GMs pay to the Cats. Calgary was pretty gullible last time…

As most here agree…. Someone is going to be gone.
There is a very, very slight chance that it is Kulikov. That leaves: Campbell, Kulikov, Gudbranson, Weaver, Jovo, Garrison, Ellerby and Strachan.

I am pretty confident that Garrison, and only Garrison, WILL BE MOVED AT THE DEADLINE. He should be healthy in a week, with a game or two before the deadline.

Someone above mentioned the Hawks…. I think that is a very strong possibility. It is well known that they are looking for a top 6 D man, and we all know the relationship between FLA and CHI. The theory was ruined when Sharp was mentioned though.

A realistic trade would be involving Stalberg and Garrison.

by Colt1235 on Feb 15, 2012 4:46 PM EST reply actions

That was me who proposed that stuff. But do you think we’re really getting fair return with Stalberg? You don’t think it should be someone more proven? He’s a winger who will maybe put up 45 points this year – on a really good team. I think it’s a question of would he continue producing .5 ppg here in FLA? He’s not that young anymore, right around where Garrison’s age is, so I don’t see his ceiling being much higher than that.

by lipsonjeff on Feb 15, 2012 4:54 PM EST up reply actions

Garrison’s gonna be a UFA, so the return is never going to be anything remotely resembling “market value”

Agreed, but I think he’d be willing to sign in a place like CHI if they give him what he’s worth. I would do the deal if it involved 2 of these 3 players: Andrew Shaw, Victor Stalberg, and Dave Bolland. We would give up Garrison and a combination of bottom six forwards/prospects/picks. That way we’re trading 2 roster players for 2 roster players and adding in some other assets for them as well to sweeten the deal.

by lipsonjeff on Feb 15, 2012 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

When we first heard about signing Strachan, what did we all jump to? Either Kuli or Garry is headed elsewhere. What do you think other GMs are thinking, knowing we had a glut of defensemen before signing Strachan. We hold the low hand.
