Around SBN: Devils Beat Rangers, Head To Stanley Cup Finals

Thursday Caterwaul: Panthers Open Forum

On a night featuring a surplus of goals-against and minus-ratings infecting most of the roster, Florida's Shawn Matthias remained afloat during his 18 shifts, scoring once while collecting 2 SOG & 1 BkS, winning 8 of 12 faceoffs and closing the evening as the only Panther with a positive plus-minus (+1). He has 1G-3A, 1 hit, 2 BkS, 7 SOG and a plus-4 in his last four games.

Why last night rocked:

  • ANH over PIT, 2-1 (REG); a stretch here, but Pens remain within four points of Florida

Why last night jonesed:

  • TOR over EDM, 4-3 (OT); Reimer: 28 saves for Leafs

Panthers Playoff Update:

Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla:

Teams FLA (65P) needs to lose in bold

  • BUF at PHI (69P), 7 p.m.; Flyers 2-0 vs Sabres in 2011-12
  • WPG (58P) at MIN, 8; Jets victorious in only meeting of season, 2-1 (REG) from Winnipeg in December

Next up for the Cats:

  • Hosting WSH tomorrow; the LBC Game Thread hopes for far less pixelation at 7.

Did you know:

On the table:

  • Globe & Mail's Gordon is getting antsy for a transaction. Any transaction.

why do we have these completely crappy games? Too late in the season for this kind of effort especially at home on a 3 game winning streak.

Looking forward the Cats are 3-1 after a blowout. Getting a regulation win vs the Caps would be a great follow up.

I was at the game last night…pretty disappointing! I really don’t understand why the boys wouldn’t come out flying. How hard is it to win 3 in a row. My biggest concern of this team now is our lack of goalies. We are pretty weak in that position and I am still not sold on Markstrom being our “goalie of the future”. I really hope that our dmen come back asap because you were totally able to tell it was robaks 2nd nhl game and Ellerby is just killing us out there. I have seen enough of him in a cats uniform! We need scoring too. With all of the Blackhawks struggles I wonder if we can do some type of trade with them. How about Ellerby, Santorelli, a draft pick or prospect and why not throw in like madden or barch for Hossa!

Not with that goaltending.

Litter Box Cats - Your tarp-free Florida Panthers Colossus

by Donny Rivette on Feb 16, 2012 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

Do you forget their Stanley Cup run two years ago, where their goaltending sucked all season? They had horrible goaltending, going so far as to use their AHL goalie, and almost won the Cup.

by MrOmnipotent on Feb 16, 2012 10:52 PM EST up reply actions

Their AHL goalie (Backlund) only played 1 minute. Michael Leighton was Carolina’s backup. They traded for him when Ray Emery got hurt. So, basically they played two backups through second half and the playoffs. Boucher started then got hurt and then Leighton started. Then Leighton started until he got hurt, so then Boucher came back from injury and he started the playoffs. Then he got hurt against the Bruins and Leighton came back.

And yes, Leighton is their AHL goalie now, but he wasn’t that season. And yes, he did play a playoff game last year, so they did actually use three goalies including their AHL goalie. But they got swept in the second round.

by John Beatty on Feb 17, 2012 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

The goaltending isn’t as bad as it looks. The problem is the defense in front of that goaltending has been subpar and the goaltending has been average. The Flyers are starting to shore up their defense and both of their goaltenders have the ability to bring it come playoff time. Lavvy doesn’t care about a goalie controversy. He plays whomever is winning. Don’t count out the Flyers, unless they draw the Rangers in the first round, which right now isn’t looking likely. (I’m thinking they’re the 4 in the 4-5 matchup against Pittsburgh or New Jersey).

From HF
Usually mild-mannered Panthers center Stephen Weiss, who ranks 11th in the league with 531 faceoffs won, was still angry a day after being repeatedly kicked out of the faceoff circle by linesmen during Wednesday’s 6-2 loss to Ottawa.
That forced inexperienced faceoff practitioners’ Kris Versteeg and Tomas Fleischmann to step in. They were a combined 1-4 on some critical draws during power plays.
"They stand there for 10 minutes with the freaking thing in their hand. They’re a joke,’’ an angered Weiss said. "They need to drop the puck and stay out of the player’s way, and that’s it.’’

by eliran2 on Feb 16, 2012 4:51 PM EST reply actions

First cross words I think I’ve ever heard out of Weiss. I didn’t see the game and don’t know FO protocol anyway but i wonder if he was right.

by jimmyh71 on Feb 16, 2012 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

In regards to this particular game, didn’t see it to know, but faceoffs are the #2 way of screwin with a team, after penalties. Some of the linesmen will hold the puck for an eternity of try a slight move to fake them out.

That was a sobering experience last night. But if we win the next game it will be quickly forgotten. We gotta be buyers this time around- but it’s not worth mortgaging the future for this year. But let’s add some offense- the defense will be back soon. We could still make some noise in the playoffs and give everyone a taste of what’s to come.

Second-rounder is precisely what Sexton stole for him from MTL in 2010.

too bad TBs second rounder is gonna be pretty high, probably why the 7th was thrown in?

To tip the balance a bit. I guess Moore’s value has deflated by exactly one 7th rounder since he was last traded.

I’m putting here for reflection later on in the season…. #14 Tomas [Fleischmann] is getting a 40G season. FLASH COUNT: 18G/24A

Maybe, but I think the pick they got from SJS was originally a Minnesota pick (which as of right now is ninth from the bottom, 39th overall). weird factor: I just noticed that SJ is visiting Tampa right now. How unfomfortable is that conversation to have:

“Uh, Dominic? Got a minute?”
“Sure thing, Mr. Yzerman.”
“You’re a scratch tonight against the Sharks because you’ve been traded.”
“Oh man. To who?”
“The Sharks.”
“Woohoo! Can I suit up for them now?”

yeah, he had to be pretty happy. a little surprised he still fetches a second rounder but he’ll be a useful player for SJ. Nice little pickup.

He didn’t play. I wonder if he went home to get some stuff before he flew out with the Sharks after the game instead.

Sorry I meant SJs not TBs.

I think the MTL second we got was lower

8 straight upcoming at home for the "Peg. They could make some noise. Can’t see them catching the Panthers (yet) due to the games in hand but they can definitely put some pressure on the Sens and Leafs.
