Poll: Leaving early during a Panthers loss
I recently saw statements from some Panthers fans in the aftermath of Wednesday's beatdown courtesy of the Ottawa Senators and how many had left the game early for various reasons. My reaction to this is that I can't blame them and would have followed suit if I was there. However, many other fans state that they stayed the entire sixty minutes no matter what and ostracize others for leaving early.
I have not as yet walked out on the Panthers. But I have walked out on my favorite team before, the Florida/Miami Marlins, usually out of pure disgust for their play or when facing a beatdown by the opposing team. Some may deem me a bad fan, even though I sat through the longest game in Marlins history (6 hours, 10 minutes) that wound up being a loss, so one can't assume that because people leave means they are lousy fans. They may be the most die hard supporters ever, so much so that it pains them to watch a horrendous showing and they just gotta get away.
So what have you, LBC crowd? Have you ever walked out on the Panthers or any other sports team? Love to hear the horror stories...

never walked out no matter how bad it was or annoyed I was.. surprised so many people have even if it is ‘rare’

Sorry didn’t know it was bad to be loyal and stick it out no matter how bad the game may be going.

It’s not. The whole point of the post is to show that both sides are not bad fans. I’m one of those that wants to stay to the end but every once in a while there is a game that I attend in which the team fails at an epic level along with a number of other factors in which I just can’t stand it and got to get out.

But Rob is surprised that even people who rarely leave early, leave early. Which kind of annoys me. I can tell you that HE did not go to 80 + games the past two crappy seasons like I have.
So Rob, if you are surprised when fans leave early, take into consideration all the shitty games we have been through, while you pick and choose a few games a year to go to.
It’s rare that i get to “pick and choose” games I want to go to.

The whole point is in discussing the subject, not labeling anyone a “bad fan”. Far as I’m concerned, pay your way in and do as you wish.

I will usually stay all the way through the game even if it’s bad but there have been times when I have to leave because if I don’t then I will get way too agitated.
I think the fact that I follow this specific team makes it worse than it might otherwise be since when I’m at a game I am likely surrounded by opposing fans openly hectoring my team in my team’s building. As you can imagine… I get testy. I was at the 1/13 game against the Penguins and I can say that though I didn’t walk out I really wanted to.
Hockey is a business, only we fans love it as a game.
Only game(s) I can remember walking out of early were Gator football games when it was 104* and they play the Western Kentucky’s of the world and its 42-3 in the 3rd quarter and my tailgate buzz was wearing off… does that count? Maybe a Marlins game way back in the day when my dad decided there was still time to get 9 holes in before dark if we left in time (plus there were 81 home games for the Marlins, not nearly the lack of supply, lol)
As far as Panther games, I always stayed when I had the choice but that’s because I didn’t get to that many a season so I enjoyed every minute I could. But I certainly don’t begrudge anyone leaving a game like last night. You never know what their situation is, and if I change the channel to watch Smash another game instead of the end of a 6-2 beatdown, I certainly can’t blame anyone for leaving early.
I thought about leaving early last night, but my reasons had little to do with the play on the ice and everything to do with the “game presentation”. The PA system, normally too loud in our section to begin with, was extraordinarily loud. Here’s a hint to the clowns running the show – when the play on the ice is not exciting, adding volume DOES NOT HELP.
There were other annoying things going on, but that was the main one for me.
A minute into the penalty kill after a TV timeout “Penalty against Florida Panthers Steven Weiss.” Or my favorite now its time for the ace underwritting penalty kill………….correction Florida lottery power play!
A lil thunder and a lil lightning is what the Cats are going to bring this year.

I left early once – in 2006 – when the Isles were winning in the third. Listened to the FLA comeback and eventual victory from the parking lot. Learned my lesson.

I had the same experience at a game against the Devils in 08-09. Surrounded by Devils fans, Panthers got outplayed early and were down 3-1 going into the 3rd. I had to hear all about how the Panthers sucked from all the New Jersey fans around me. One particularly loud and obnoxious (read: drunk) NJ fan a few rows in front of me made me so irritated that I just decided to pack it in and go home early before I lost my temper with him. On the way home I get texts from my friend that David Booth scored two goals to tie the game and send it to overtime. The Panthers eventually lost the game but I still learned that it’s better to stay and wait it out because you never know what’s going to happen.
I was at the Devils game earlier this year where the Panthers came back from being down 3-0 to eventually win the game on a beautiful goal by Flash. I literally hadn’t even sat down before the cats were down by three, but I stayed through the game this time and they rewarded my loyalty in a huge way. I literally couldn’t talk the whole next day from screaming so loud during that game.
My point is, it’s a toss up. As much as I love this team, my love for them is a diversion from the other things in my daily life that have a real effect on my well being, school, work, etc. If I don’t like what I’m seeing, and I judge that I’ll be better in the long run for not enduring it, I won’t. Besides, if I leave when they’re down by 3 and they come back to win the game in dramatic fashion, then I lost out, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love this team, it just means that I was the jinx that game.
Hockey is a business, only we fans love it as a game.
I want the full 60 minutes out of my seats, no matter how much it costs me. I hardly make it to 2 NHL games a year anymore, so I soak it in no matter the outcome. Plus that, you still get to see the little things players do during a total meltdown.
For a team as historically bad as FLA, I wouldnt suggest people are bad fans for walking out after a game like last nights.
People who walk out on an awesome team, say NYR for getting beat down by CHI, thats a different story. People who leave before an inevitable win…dont even get me started!
I’m putting here for reflection later on in the season…. #14 Tomas [Fleischmann] is getting a 40G season. FLASH COUNT: 18G/24A

While I can understand walkin out of a 6 hour baseball game (Personally hate baseball, unless I’m attending a game, but won’t walk out of a normal 9 inning game), I don’t care how bad a hockey game might be. I’m against leaving. But then again, I refuse to pay to go to a Panther game, no matter how well they suck or are playin well. The thieves just do not deserve my money.
you shouldnt watch either then of course since they make money with tv advertising :]

Not if you circumvent the normal means to watch them in video form…..

I don’t have cable tv. And I mostly do not buy anything from their sponsors. Only one I might use is MetroPCS, and I"ve been using them longer than they’ve sponsored the Panthers.

I guess seeing the tv advertisements pretty much tells me who to not spend money on. So it helps me boycott them, in a roundabout way.

I left with 6 minutes left. It isnt fun being a 17 year old driving out of there with some of these horrible drivers here.
But if course I never leave early when we are winning!

I was forced to leave a game against the Bruins last season. My amigos (who drove) were so annoyed the Cats were down with 10 minutes left in the 3rd. I can’t even remember the score, but my dude friend was not impressed. First, last, and only time I have ever left a game early. Especially after the Devils game early this season, I always sort of believe our boys can pull it off.

Frankly, I couldn’t care less about leaving a game early. I mostly stay the whole game because I car pool with someone (and can’t leave without them) and I usually stay after the game for a post-game tailgate. I admit, if it wasn’t for those reasons, I would change my answer.

Not anymore!
I only left a game very early (end of first period) once when my wife called me to say that my daughter had fallen and might have broken her arm.
One other time, about 3 or 4 years ago the Panthers were playing the F’n Devils and we were down 2 goals with 4 minutes left. Because I was with my 7 year old daughter I told her “it’s the freaking Devils, they are going to boor their way to the win, let’s go!” I had decided we would head out early, halfway down the escalator from the 400 level I hear the goal horn go off. I said to my girl “I don’t believe in miracles, but lets grab a seat.” So we sneak into 134 and grab a pair of seats just in time to see David Booth pop in a rebound with our goalie pulled to tie the score" We did end up losing that game in OT but i vowed that I would NEVER leave a game early again. You never know when you will see a players first goal, or a crazy bounce , or even a fight , so I would never leave early. Never again!
I have left games early but it never had anything to do with the score. My job involves me being on call from time to time and when I get that call the old “sorry, I’m at a hockey game” just doesn’t fly.
I think one of my favorite Panthers games ever was February 10, 2009. The panthers were down 4 to 1 with about 12 minutes left in the third. There seemed to be less than 2,000 fans left in the building and I was feeling pretty crappy but not ready to leave by any stretch. All of a sudden Horton pots one and a few people heading for the exits turn around to cheer. Some of them stayed, some left. A couple of minutes later Ville Peltonen gets his 9th of the year. Now it’s a whole new game. We can do this! Less than 4 minutes after that Zednik TIES IT UP!!! We have a game here kids! 3 goals in less than half a period and most people who started their evening off in the stands probably didn’t know it had happen until the next morning. That game ended with Zed getting his 10th goal of the season in OT and me without a voice the next day from cheering at the top of my lungs.
The thing about hockey is that the game is so fluid you can’t assume X number of minutes means the end. After being in that building for that comeback I promised my self I’d never give up on a game. Ever.
:(){ :|:& };:
I've left early a couple of times...
There are two reasons I’ll leave early (and it’s only been 3 or 4 times in hundreds of games at the BAC):
1. I’m surrounded by obnoxious douchebags who are cheering for the other team and we’re losing huge with a few minutes to go and I simply cannot stand the thought of going to jail after I stab someone for being a classless and utterly disgusting human being…
2. We’re losing huge and I’m getting up at 0300 to fly a plane somewhere the next morning…
Other than that, I look at my seats as an investment. Each minute of a hockey game costs me a little over a dollar for each of my seats… If I leave early, that’s money I’m giving to you know who for FREE… It disgusts me to do that.
Let's hope you and many other Cats fans receive this level of karma at some point between now and the next couple of years
My first walkout was a blowout by the Chicago Cubs on the Marlins somewhere in June of 2003. The Cubs fans were obnoxious as hell. I had never been so disappointed at a Fish game cause the D-Train (my fave of all-time) got rocked. I was 15 at the time. And then October rolled around and I understood the meaning of karma.

You must have sat next to me when I was cheering for Keenan to get fired as coach in early 2003-2004 season. LOL.

I agree with that sentiment, but I also think that if the team is putting forth pathetic effort on ice, that I don’t have a responsibility to cheer them on. If the Panthers are losing and it’s a blowout, I see nothing wrong with leaving – especially if you’ve got kids with you. If I’m by myself, I usually stay until the last minute or so to see which players actually gave a darn.

Murph, again you find a way to put it better than I ever could.
Hockey is a business, only we fans love it as a game.
The only reason
Is due to a fan, normally Philly or Boston fans. Doesn’t happen often, maybe once or twice a season and I am at most home games.
At the Ice & Dice I was speaking to Skille, we both commented on how much it sucked last year when they went down like 11 games in a row. I never left early for any of those games. I’m a go down with the ship kind of gal.
I have left 2 games this season early- one because I needed to be at work at 5:30am- and the other was because the Bruin fans around me were being such Uber D-bags that I knew I was not going to be able to hold myself back from saying something. The ushers in my section get happy when they see me because I am such a loud mouth- I would hate for them to have to REMOVE me for an altercation.
I hereby predict Captain Mike Weaver #43 will score 6G 20A -RCR 0G13A 2/13
Be impeccable with your word, don't take anything personally, don't make assumptions, always do your best...
A couple times
I left a game against the Habs early a couple of seasons ago because the Panthers were playing poorly and I was surrounded by jerky Canadiens fans. And I left at least one other blowout early in the third period. It was something like 5-1 and I decided during the break if they came out strong I’d stay and they got scored on in like the first minute, so I left. That was 2008-2009, I think.
That’s pretty much it, other than leaving a few minutes early via the stairs for losses against teams who have obnoxious fans in the building, and that’s strictly for purposes of not wanting to see them in the lobby or the parking lot on my way out.
