Thursday Caterwaul: Panthers Open Forum
The consistency at which Washington’s offense provides support for either Neuvirth or Tomas Vokoun is uneven at best. Given how frequently the Capitals have been out-shot and out-chanced recently, they’ve been relying on sterling performances from the netminders in many of their wins. At BankAtlantic Center [Wednesday], both trends came to a head – Florida held a 38-28 advantage in shots as the Capitals suffered from dry spells offensively and Neuvirth wasn’t flawless.

Good article but I think the Panthers will put up a good fight in round one unlike the Thrash who got schooled. As the three seed they will likely avoid the remaining big boys (Pittsburgh and Philly) in the East and play Ottawa, NJ or Toronto. Temas the could beat and advance against.

TSN’s Ice Chips:
Expect both Dustin Byfuglien and Alex Burmistrov to be back in the Winnipeg Jet lineup ASAP. Officially, whether the two players return Thursday against the Tampa Lightning will be a “game-time decision,” according to head coach Claude Noel, but both men have practiced fully with the team for the last two days and declared themselves good to go after Wednesday’s session at the Tampa Bay Times Forum. – Winnipeg Free Press

The Rampage will be seeking a franchise-record eighth straight win today at Oklahoma City when they take to the ice in a 7 p.m. faceoff. At 29-11-2-3, the Barons sport the best record in the AHL.

Florida Panthers
The Big Question: Can they win the Southeast? The Panthers’ unlikely success this season has them positioned near the top of the division, one point behind the Capitals as of Wednesday. They’ve benefited from more charity points (11) than anyone else in the NHL, so tie-breakers will be tough. The best path to the playoffs will be to win the division; can this team keep pace with the resurgent Caps?
The Most Intriguing Player Near the Deadline: Scott Clemmensen. The health of Jose Theodore probably means they hang onto Clemmer, but there aren’t many goaltending options out there for teams looking for help; his effective play, low cost and expiring contract might get some sniffs.

Columbus got screwed last night: http://bluejackets.nhl.com/club/blogpost.htm?id=6103
funky clock… don’t feel too bad for them though. hardly impacts their season.

It might matter to the Sharks though. The Kings are only two points behind now (SJ has three games in hand). That, and a reg win is better than a shootout win when it comes to tiebreakers (if this rule was in place three years ago, the Panthers would have made the playoffs).
It’s largely irrelevant, but interesting nonetheless.
Hardly impacts the Blue Jackets, maybe
But that has a HUGE effect on the WC playoff race. The Kings now have an extra point buffer between them and the 8-12 teams. That’s ridiculous that they were able to get away with that.
The Florida Panthers have become Chicago's retirement home. This is oddly fitting.
My feelings on the Florida Panthers' AHL affiliate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cR-WiGKZtg
was being silly with that comment. with Columbus’ luck they will probably lose the draft lottery too.
yeah, it sucks for everyone involved in the WC race but the game’s over. 2 reg points for the Kings. Would be interested to know what really happened there. that was one loooooooong second.

The Kings GM released a statement about how the clock readjusts itself automatically (it’s BS to me).
“Those clocks are sophisticated instruments that calculate time by measuring electrical charges called coulombs — given the rapidity and volume of electrons that move through the measuring device the calibrator must adjust at certain points which was the delay you see — the delay is just recalibrating for the clock moving too quickly during the 10 – 10ths of a second before the delay — this insures that the actual playing time during a period is exactly 20 minutes That is not an opinion — that is science — amazing devise quite frankly."
I think the league wants this one under the rug. If it were up to me I’d give each team a point in the standings and let them play the overtime/shootout when they next meet (3/8).
yeah seems fishy but no way they change the result. you play to the buzzer (even if it’s late) and the Kings scored.

The league is investigating – for what that’s worth – but have already stated final score will not change regardless of their findings.

… that IS way the …
Anyway, I’m reasonably knowledgeable when it comes to electronics and timekeeping, and I don’t have a single clue WTH the Kings GM is trying to say. In any case I’m going to email the quote to a couple of my engineering buddies here at work – it should be good for quite a laugh tomorrow.

Just something I have been meaning to mention on here a few times but keep forgetting to… and was reminded by a post made by a certain hockey… buzzer… BLAH….
But a player who I have bene thinking for a month or so that could fit the offensive mold we could add to the 2nd line is Ray Whitney. I think he would be a great fit and likely would welcome a return to the place that he really got his career going in.
The ageless wonder? hmmm maybe. You’d think with the way he’s moved around and the former regimes love of guys in their 30’s he would have made another stop here at some point.

Whitney has had quite a career for a guy who had to start out in the old IHL. Getting close to 1000 points.

I’m sure the Phoenix Coyotes, currently 12th in the West, willing be leading to trade their leading scorer.

can’t see it SASK unless he’s a pending UFA which I don’t think is the case.
Would be a nice fit though…nice thought but very unlikely
126 days until Prometheus
Thats actually the reason why I mention him, he is a pending UFA. According to my information I have for my website. I can’t see it happening since he does indeed lead them in scoring, but I think he would be a nice short term fit, in that he fits the mold of the secondary scoring we need and the expiring contract we would require.

If I were an Ottawa fan I’d be a little concerned about them slipping out of the top 8 at this point. Much like the Panthers supposedly comfortable lead in the SE earlier this season the Senators are in playoff position based in part on the games in hand they have on trailing teams and have lost four in row. Hopefully they make it. would like to see NJ, Washington or Toronto miss instead.
