Monday Caterwaul: Panthers Open Forum
Sunday's loss to Anaheim featured four power play chances for the Panthers, who were unable to convert on any of them. Such an "achievement" is far from new for this club: Florida has gone scoreless on the man-advantage in games with four or more such opportunities a staggering 14 times in 2011-12.
Above you'll find we've skipped the typical "game highlights" - since there weren't any of the offensive variety - and gone straight to what can only be a save-of-the-year candidate by Jose Theodore.

Why last night rocked:
- Latest episode of "The Walking Dead" was far superior to last week's. Otherwise nada.
Why last night jonesed:
- WPG over COL, 5-1; Jets now 4-1-1 last six at home
Panthers Playoff Update:
- FLA lost to ANH 0-2; playoff odds down 9.9 to 69.7% per Sports Club Stats
Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla, beyond the obvious:
Teams FLA needs to lose in bold…
- OTW at NYI, 1 p.m.; Isles have won last three between these clubs, two went to extra time
- WSH at CAR, 7:30 (NBC-SN); yet another Biggest Game of the Season for Caps
Next up for the Cats:
- Three whole days off before hosting Minnesota Thursday; LBC Game Thread at 7
Did you know:
- Though the Panthers are currently in the midst of a season-worst three-game losing streak for the first time, things were far different a year ago: six different occasions found Florida on a three or more game winless stretch.
Sunday’s Organizational News:
- Rampage victorious in Oklahoma City
- Per OFP, F Matt Bradley sustained an injury which coach Dineen deemed not "short term", recall to come

gudbranson
i can’t give eric gudbranson any more slack. every time he is on the ice i feel like the panthers are going to get scored on. he is -17 constantly turns it over in his own zone, goes into panic mode every time the puck touches his stick, if he tries to send the puck out of the zone his passes are never on target and often result in icing or a pass to the opposing team, has an average shot once he finally gets it off and by the time he lines up the opposing player for a check they shake him off like the glass shook off bradley last night. lastly, what scares me most is he tries to be the last one off the ice like he is the captain, which to me shows he is way over confident and clearly doesn’t know how awful he has been.
ohh yeah, and his helmet doesn’t fit he spends half the game trying to fix it every time he gets knocked around.
don’t get me wrong i still have high hopes for him and think in time he will turn into a good player, but right now he is hurting the panthers.
I wouldn’t get too down on him…he’s a 20 year-old defenseman who has yet to play 60 games in the NHL; tough position to star in before 300 games or so.
He’s a very respectable minus-2 over the past six (3W/3L) with 1A, and the other aspects of his game (hits, BkS, SOG) are beginning to increase in a positive direction. There are bigger “problems” out there than him right now.

I could not believe the 4 minute power play or lack of it.
I hereby predict Captain Mike Weaver #43 will score 6G 20A -RCR 0G13A 2/13

We had a 4 minute power play?

I almost walked out after that. But going back to a previous post on LBC I stayed ;)

2011 Playoffs w/TB
Bergenheim: 9-2-11 +2 1 GWG 1 PPP 32 Hits 9 BkS 46 SOG .196 Shoot%
Stamkos: 6-7-13 -5 1 GWG 6 PPP 20 Hits 8 BkS 46 SOG .130 Shoot%
But yeah, I’d take Stammer on a loan.

I think Gudbranson has played well as of late (since the end of December is when you have seen a noticeable increase in his play). His defensive game has solidified and that’s a Gud (see what I did there?) enough start for me. He still does have some improving to do in the offensive zone though, his shots seem rushed, and he can never seem to get them on the net or through traffic because I think he wants to show everybody that he is willing to shoot the puck instead of taking the best shot.
Honestly, he hasn’t been the weak link in my eyes over these past few games though. Hate to put too much blame on the guy, but I think Robak was atrocious in his 3 games up. . . but then again, so was the rest of the team and they were his first 3 games so I don’t have too much concern about his future. I’m sure Petrovic is going to go through the same thing too. . . just the nature of a rookie defenceman.

i wasn’t referring to his work ethic, i was talking about the end of periods and games he always wants to be the last into the locker room. work ethic is one thing that i think will eventually make him good. i think i’m pretty accurate about everything else. i know he is young etc. but i see a lot of goals get scored when he is on the ice.
Its something younger guys do, sometimes they like to gather up all the pucks at the end of practice and shoot them into the bucket or whatever. Its not a indication theyre trying to impress anyone, theyre just putting in extra time.

Given the state of the Captain debacle, I’m guessing he wants to take the reins. And who can fault him for that cause he might be getting groomed for the title. If it takes a rookie to step up than what does that say about the veterans? I say we just put a box of Cap’N Crunch in the locker room and call it the captain.

I think it’s more of a leadership debacle. Yes all these new guys have winners, have character, are good team mates but where have they exactly led before? I may be wrong but I don’t recall any of them being a Captain in the NHL level. If a rookie is the only one tryng to step then we really have some more serious issues.
A lil thunder and a lil lightning is what the Cats are going to bring this year.
I really don’t think you said one correct statement in that whole thing, honestly.

i mean already listed everything what else do you want me to say
what does he do that’s so “great”?
he was playing great when temmu skated right by him for the GW goal.
You mean after Weiss turned it over?
A lil thunder and a lil lightning is what the Cats are going to bring this year.
-17…Erik Gudbransons plus/minus
-18…Panthers goal differential
Cant expect a rookie to rack up the +’s when his team never scores

He’s gotten a lot better since the start of the season. Apart from the fact that he’s too hesitant to shoot and when he finally winds up to take a slapper, there’s someone in front and he just misses the net completely. That’s the only negative in his game i’d say
So he’s not Calder material…..but he will certainly be a stud when the time comes!

I think Thomas gets the call. I’d prefer that whoever is called up sign something stating that they promise to sit in front of the goalie to cause havoc unlike the duck game.
I’d prefer Thomas, but with all the callups we’ve put SA through I think they’d appreciate keeping the guy they actually signed this offseason

hey guys, coming into the Duck talk late. Just watched the game on the DVR.
positives: another really good game from Theodore. Bergenhiem played very well. They held the Ducks to one goal despite the injuries on the D. And after Dineen finally wised up and shuffled the lines a bit they outplayed the Ducks for most of the second half of the game.
negatives: Another bad start. no one can finish on this team! Weiss, Versteeg, Flash and Campbell were not the best Panthers, hard to win in this league when your best guys aren’t bringing it. Taking too long or simply passing up good chances to shoot. for example Kopecky was open in the slot at least twice with the puck and instead of shooting tried to make a pretty pass which didn’t connect. Passing in all zones needs to improve. some coaching gaffes: Dineen took too long to shuffle the lines and his move with about 5 minutes of going to 4 forwards was ill advised. The puck went into the Panthers zone and with Sammy still on D stayed there for a long time allowing the Ducks to eat up precious time and take away a lot of the momentum the Panthers had built up.
How many times in the last ten years have we seen the Panthers totally gas a home stand like this late in the season?
This is really disappointing. 0-3 with only 3 goals scored. ugh!

Awesome article from OTF:
It’s time to make a splash. You need a big scoop. But actually scooping something is hard work, and leaves yourself vulnerable if you’re wrong. Here’s what you do: capitalize on the inherently ever-changing nature of the trade landscape. Come out with a scoop that no one can verify and then quickly recant, as if you were right but circumstances has changed.

Watching the capitals getting dominated in carolina..
I gotta say, this capitals team is so far from special. Defensive breakdowns, no energy on the ice, no energy behind the bench, the coach looks out of place, no visible leadership by ovie or anyone else really. Apart from the high end skill they’re gifted with, this team looks completely beatable and the panthers, if they get their act together, can definitely claim that SE title this season
And they just did. It’s almost like the Lightning and the Canes are actually trying to help us out.

Or maybe they think “We just might win this thing”
