"It would be nice to keep everyone here and not having to wholesale guys out or trade your buddies. If we can add a piece here or there without breaking up the group we have, without destroying the chemistry, that would be the best-case scenario."

The Capital’s looked terrible last night. But they will bounce back when Backstrom returns- they got Green back last night but it takes a few games to readjust. The division is there for the taking still and everyone (even Carolina) has a chance. We need more offense and will have to give up something to get it. If we want to go to the playoffs this year we have no choice. Next year we can package another deal when Upshall and Sturm are back or if some of the hotshot rookies make the team and get back what we lose to get some offense now. Garrison (and I hate to lose him) would be desirable even with his contract situation. I doubt Jovo has any value but we have to give up on the defensive side because we aren’t scoring enough. One silver lining of all these injuries is it forced Gudbranson, Ellerby, and Strachan to grow up fast, and maybe we have a player in Yonkman too. I think our defense is adequate- we need more scorers.

Mahovlich at Isles/Sens Monday
When Ottawa Senators commentator Denis Potvin suggested Detroit director of pro scouting Mark Howe and Florida Panthers scout Peter Mahovlich were in attendance for Monday’s Sens-Islanders game to eye Isles hulking 6-foot-4, 253-pound defenceman Milan Jurcina, Howe and Mahovlich broke into wry grins while refusing to verbally acknowledge Povin’s suggestion. Potvin later was informed that Isles defenceman Mark Eaton has asked for a trade and likely is in play too.

THN's Campbell: Is Nash worth "Superstar return"?
But as we ponder the magnitude of The Rick Nash Sweepstakes™ that could end up with him being traded within the next week, exactly how much culpability for the mess the Blue Jackets have become should be attributed to Nash? He’s the highest-paid and marquee talent on a team that has, for the most part, been terrible. He has never experienced the feeling of winning a playoff game, has never scored 80 points, been a first- or second-team all-star or put up a 50-goal season.

yeah, they should hold on to those guys unless they move out Weiss’ salary to bring in a total upgrade at center.

I think Weiss is an ideal 2nd line center and without the benefit of having 2 legitimate scoring lines everynight he’s not benefiting from favourable matchups. Unfortunately hes our best option for the moment

by Chris S Roberts on Feb 21, 2012 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

When a team like the Panthers lacks first line talent, what they have to do is have second liners and third liners playing on the fourth line. That’s where they can get their mismatches and by rolling four lines it keeps everyone fresh and constant pressure on the opponent. We need another second line type player so that we can have a fourth line with players like Goc and Santorelli, not Madden, Barch or Bradley (or Repik). So, when you can’t have everything, you have to give up a Garrison with his booming shot, or Jovo, or someone on defense because you need the numbers on offense, even if you lose defenseman scoring potential. Unless you can trade an injured player like Sturm or Upshall, which i don’t think there’s a market for.

by scapegoat52 on Feb 21, 2012 10:27 AM EST reply actions

Santorelli has no future here; he’s either a buyout in the summer or more likely a throw-in on a deal before then.

by Sycamore on Feb 21, 2012 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

maybe we underestimated it so far, we haven’t been very good since he’s been out of the lineup and i don’t like to call it causation right away but then again, veteran leadership goes a long way

by eliran2 on Feb 21, 2012 3:47 PM EST up reply actions

Why does it matter what he’s paid if the Panthers are in the bottom third of the league in cap hit? It’s not like the Rangers having to bury Wade Redden in the AHL because they’re paying him $6+ million, which would put them right at the cap ceiling.

by John Beatty on Feb 22, 2012 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe we can package him with Garrison- that would bring a second liner (but we still need another one). There’s no way we can get a first line player the price would be too steep. But we could improve the team by having more quality offensive players to roll four lines.

by scapegoat52 on Feb 21, 2012 10:38 AM EST reply actions

I would love to see Garrison traded, honestly. His value will never be higher and he is likely to leave via FA.

by Colt1235 on Feb 21, 2012 10:43 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I’d miss Garribomb, but I agree with you. If Tallon can’t resign him, he’s got to be traded. Probably to a contender that needs D. I don’t see teams out of the race trading for a potential UFA. Sadly, I don’t see teams in the race giving up the top center or scorer that the Panthers need.

by jimmyh71 on Feb 21, 2012 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

I’ll take a player like Stalberg from CHI. Of course we won’t get anything close to a top line center

by Colt1235 on Feb 21, 2012 12:19 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

If we throw in garrison, santorelli, and a prospect and get stalberg and another forward such as Andrew Shaw in return, I’d make that deal.

by lipsonjeff on Feb 21, 2012 12:30 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I wouldn’t even need Shaw, I just don’t want another Bouwmeester situation

by Colt1235 on Feb 21, 2012 12:33 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Stalberg seems young and promising, but he’s as old as garrison and I don’t think is a fair return for the top goal-scoring dman in the nhl this year. His numbers aren’t crazy, and that’s while playing on an offensively talented team. Shaw is young and promising and played well in his callups. If we got both or stalberg and another established forward, I would make the deal. Dave bolland? Dunno.

by lipsonjeff on Feb 21, 2012 12:37 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

And throwing in santorelli and a decent prospect is the part that ensures we get another solid forward

by lipsonjeff on Feb 21, 2012 12:37 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

We also have much more leverage here than with bouw. Garrison wants to be back, it’s not like everyone knows we have to get rid of him. And his stock is high. I think we have the leverage in dealing garrison.

Q: In terms of untouchables, most would say that list starts with forward Jonathan Huberdeau and goalie Jacob Markstrom. Who else would you consider to be untouchable among your future assets?

A: I’m not going to tell you that. I don’t think that’s any of your business. You can say whatever you want and how you want. That’s something that’s internal. That’s a hockey ops decision, and we’ll just leave it at that. I’m not trying to be smart, but that’s the way we do business. I don’t deal in speculation. I don’t deal in innuendo.

I’m all for you guys concluding Sherman is an idiot(he is) but I still think he made a good move for COL, regardless of what Quincey was worth to DET.

I’m putting here for reflection later on in the season…. #14 Tomas [Fleischmann] is getting a 40G season. FLASH COUNT: 19G/25A

Tampa Bay trades Kyle Quincey to Detroit for 2012 1st and Sebastien Piche.

And a prospect?! I guess since the next draft is only about 15 players deep Detroit figured their pick wasn’t going to be worth a whole lot anyway, but still…

some background on Quincey

John Buccigross @Buccigross
Interesting comments on Quincey from those that know- “big problem in the room. Bad guy. Never liked him.” Detroit must think they can deal.

Kevin Porter @kporter12
@Buccigross Furtherest thing from the truth coming from his roommate. Great guy in and out of the room.

Some people say he was on the bad list for whining. We’ll never know.

Are the Panthers expected to resign Versteeg anytime soon? At all?

I saw somewhere on the web that there were three years left on his contract.

by parallelcircle on Feb 21, 2012 4:24 PM EST reply actions

He’s an RFA after this season and word is that talks between his camp and Tallon have heated up as of late, which is good for everyone.

Obviously this is untrue… seeing the extra years on his contract I bought his jersey >.>

by parallelcircle on Feb 21, 2012 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

I bought his jersey too, because I can say with 99.9% certainty that we’ll see Versteeg here probably at least until he’s 30

Tallon is working on it. I’m sure it’ll get done.

@Real_ESPNLeBrun: Tampa now has 2 first-rounders, 3 second-round rounders, and another second-rounder in either ‘12 or ’13 at Florida’s option (Kubina)

Sounds a lot like our draft last year.

Watch Stevie Y trade Levavalier during the draft for a 1st and a roster player, and then make Stamkos the captain for the new era in Tampa. I think that’d be smart of him.

by lipsonjeff on Feb 21, 2012 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

I wish he would go do this somewhere else. Pretty tired of taking a backseat to Tampa in our division/state.

Here’s to their picks being duds.

If you went to the rookie games earlier this year at Saveology Iceplex you’d see how shallow the Lightning prospect pool is. Florida rookies have looked very good against Tampa’s rookies the past two times the Panthers have done that tournament at Saveology. Point is, they need the picks the same way we did.

Why wouldn’t he trade Lecavalier during the deadline? Just curious why you think he waits until the draft if he plans to move him.

by JDMorris on Feb 21, 2012 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

At the draft you already know where that 1st round pick lies. At the deadline you’re trading to a team that hopes their pick will be South of 15th. Could potentially be worth more at the draft.

Why wouldn’t he trade Lecavalier during the deadline?

No movement clause. Anyway, Lecavalier has played his whole career in Tampa, he’s done loads of charity work and integrated himself into the community. He’s never shown any interest in playing anywhere else. Why would they trade him?

stamkos is slowly becoming more the way ovechkin was. it’s just more quiet then ovi’s transition

they should trade a couple of those picks for a goalie.

but LA, STL, and VAN probably dont want picks for their young goalies. They are cup contenders (kinda LA, but not really)

Philly just came up big for us.

5-4/OT. Philly tied it in the 3rd with 10 seconds left and scored the OT winner with less than a minute.

Shame about the three point game. Only the Panthers should be involved in three pointers, as far as I’m concerned. The result’s kind of meh, too. The Panthers have four games in hand on the Jets (can I call them the Nyets?). If the Panthers dropped all four they deserve to miss the postseason.

I wish some of the other teams in the hunt would just drop out already and start trading away assets. I want the Panthers to get some scoring without selling the future.

The West is packed up, the East is packed up. Give it one more game, then CAR and EDM might start moving guys. Another two losses and BUF and MTL might follow. I’m surprised TBL shipped out so soon, and so hard.

I’m a little surprised by this too. Not only are they five points out of the playoffs they are five points from being the 3 seed.
Despite the deals they picked up another win so you can’t really question it (for now). Must think that even if they make it they aren’t serious contenders this year. That will work pretty sweet for them if they add for the future and still get into the playoffs.

I’d normally say the same thing, but considering that the Jets were 11 seconds away from two points I don’t mind seeing the three point game.
