Wednesday Caterwaul: Panthers Open Forum
Florida's 141 goals-for ranks as 25th overall but 14th in the Eastern Conference, ahead of only the Islanders (136). In Sunrise, the Cats' 67 places them dead last in the EC, while somehow managing 9th on the road with 74.

Why last night rocked:
Didn't exactly "rock", but could have been worse...
- PHI over WPG, 5-4 (OT); FLA's 4 games-in-hand on Jets can prove the difference in April if Cats can tidy up their current woes
- NJ over TOR, 4-3 (OT); Devils: winners of 7 straight on road as Leafs sputter with 1-5-1 overall record in past seven
Why last night jonesed:
- Unthinkable just a week ago, conference bottom-feeders all within 8 points of Panthers as BUF and TB gain victories Tuesday; Florida has played fewer games than everyone
Panthers Playoff Update:
- FLA did not play; playoff odds up 0.3 to 67% per Sports Club Stats
Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla:
Teams FLA needs to lose in bold…
- WSH at OTW, 7 p.m.; despite stellar recent record, Sens are 1-3-2 over past six in Kanata
Next up for the Cats:
- Tomorrow at home vs Minnesota; LBC Game Thread drops the hammer at 7
Did you know:
- In 17 career games against the Wild, D Brian Campbell is 1-9-10 with a plus-11 & 29 SOG
Tuesday’s Organizational News:
- Making the case for San Antonio G (and non-Panthers prospect) Dov-Grumet Morris
Tuesday’s NHL Transactions:
- TB sends F Matt Fornataro to CHI for F Brandon Segal
- TB sends D Kyle Quincey to DET for D Sebastien Piche & 1st rd-pick ('12)
- TB sends F Steve Downie to COL for D Kyle Quincy

We depend on the hospitality of others again tonight as we have to root for the Sens. At least its not Montreal.
Can the Panthers finally gain control of their own fate starting tomorrow night? A good start would be putting pucks in the net again and giving some goal support to the goaltending we’ve been getting lately.
Seeing Red since 1994.
Feb 22th and only 2 teams out of 30 are totally out of it. amazing.

thanks to the league for giving the losing team a point in OT and Shootout situations…..this has allowed the mediocre teams to actually stay in the race…..I used to think that was bad….I’ve changed my mind and now believe it really keeps everything more exciting for all fans of all teams!
still not a big fan of the 3 point games but it does keep interest up which is a good thing.

Panthers have 11 unwarranted points, second most in the league…
by Colt1235 on Feb 22, 2012 11:23 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
I wouldn’t exactly call the points unwarranted. In the old system they would simply be ties but when you add those last two columns in the standings together the Panthers are a losing team.
when I look at the Panthers I find a lot of reasons to think they don’t really deserve to make the playoffs.
Of course if they do I’ll be ecstatic but I’d like to see them earn it a little more and not get in because Washington decided to underachieve this season.

My daily contribution to stirring the pot:
From Florida: Jason Garrison
From Edmonton: Sam Gagner and a mid-round pick (2-4).
Discuss.

Gagner’s recent play says the Oilers will keep him.

18 points in his last 9 games. I’d say a light bulb went on.

Only reason that I think the Oilers might be willing to deal is that Ganger has never shown a great deal of consistency, then again prior to this season neither has Garrison. Additionally, as far as I can tell they need some help on the blueline. If I were to give a completely honest opinion, I would say that at first blush this looks like a trade of two guys that have looked very promising lately who in the past were not as attractive targets.
Hockey is a business, only we fans love it as a game.
I don’t know, I think Gagner is still pretty young and has a lot of upside. Despite being somewhat inconsistent he has started his career with four straight 40 point seasons and he is going to post career highs this season. Yes, the Oilers do need help on D but I don’t see them trading Gagner straight up for Garrison (throw in a pick and maybe that changes things). I think they’ll hold on to Gagner for at least one more season to see if he continues what he is doing right now.

How about this:
To Edmonton: Jason Garrison, Drew Shore
To Florida: Sam Gagner, 4th round pick
That seem more realistic?

yes, something like that makes more sense.

makes more sense for the Oilers I mean. I don’t know what the Panthers think about Gagner. He would definitely help but are they looking for another smallish center second line type center?
107 days until Prometheus
by Todd Little on Feb 22, 2012 11:47 AM EST up reply actions
Well, the consensus here for a while has been to try and get a second line type player to bring in some additional scoring. I think if Gagner were to be brought in, he might help make the second line more potent, which would help to take some pressure off of Weiss’ line. I think that it would hopefully pay off in scoring depth ultimately. If Gagner came in and made the second line a more realistic scoring threat I think that would be worth it.
Other options that I think are worth the Panthers considering would be Derek Roy, and Drew Stafford. Roy presents the same type of problem as Gagner, smaller center and another problem that Gagner doesn’t have that he hasn’t performed great this year, but Stafford at least has size on his side along with some scoring potential

Yeah I know, but the problem really is where do you get one? And more importantly, what do you give up to get him? Unless Dale can fool Columbus to give up on Jeff Carter for a package that is very low risk on the Panthers side.

I am usually not a big fan of centers (especially top two line centers) who are not great passers but I feel the Panthers would actually be a good fit for Carter’s skill set. Versteeg and Flash are both good passers who can get Carter the puck if he were to come here. then pair him with Huberdeau down the line who is an elite passer. Might be nice.

Character issues….not Tallons’ type……..I’d love to get Brad Boyes from Buffalo. He’d fit perfectly on the top line
was talking strictly skill set – don’t see it happening.
Boyes is having a bad season. the price would have to be really low.

Skill set yes for Carter……Everyone in Buffalo is having a bad season….look at Ville Leino……Last year in Philly he had 19 goals and 34 assists……..this year he doesn’t even exist…..Big letdown for a very excited Buffalo fan base at the start of the season……..I like Gaustads’ size…but he doesn’t score.
Boyes might have an injury problem. I wouldn’t trade much to get him, maybe throw him some cash in the offseason

Jose Theodore: Still getting it done.

No. The tandem we have right now is average in my opinion and I don’t see that we have another guy that can step in and play a big role in net going forward. Markstrom’s injury history is cause for concern but without him that position gets very thin.
Hockey is a business, only we fans love it as a game.
yes, id give up anyone sans huberdeau and bjugstad for claude. there are few players in the league of that caliber. philadelphia has shown that even with spotty goaltending, if you can score you can win. while i dont want to have that weakness, i would easily give markstrom for a 40-50 goal scorer.

In the Physics of the Flyers all this would do is make Markstrom the next contestant in the Flyer Tap episodes and they would so NOT trade Giroux (thats the correct spelling)

Tallon is not going to give up the future for immediate gratification. My worthless 2 cents is that we are ahead of where he imagined the Panthers to be this season. If he really built this 2011-2012 group based on the character/grit/willtowin then I would think he would be looking at them and say- We are capable right now as we are to make it into the playoffs, if we want it, then make it happen.
We have seen moments of this group having offense come from all 4 lines, the D works when healthy and we do have 2 reliable goal tenders…

No, and the Flyers aren’t giving up Giroux for anything. He’s the reason they felt they could trade Carter and Richards.

Ottawa suddenly just 2 points behind Boston for the division. Who woulda thunk it. I guess we switch from trying to stay with them for 7th\8th to hoping they win to keep the other teams down. That was quick.
The Bruins still have 3 games in hand and will probably be active at the deadline. Even if Horton does come back, they have plenty of cap space without putting him on LTIR to free up his salary.
That said, if the Sens can be consistently good for a couple of weeks, they could force the B’s to catch back up to them for the rest of the season.

Small sigh of relief this morning...
as the Panthers have survived to be able to say they are still top of the SE on gameday tomorrow, no matter what happens tonite. Basically means little, except that they are again in the drivers seat….
Scenerio #1 WSH win
OTT – 20 GR – 70 pts
FLA – 24 GR – 65 pts
WSH – 22 GR – 65 pts
WPG – 20 GR – 65 pts
TOR – 22 GR – 65 pts
Scenerio #2 – OTT Wins
OTT – 20 GR – 72 pts
FLA – 24 GR – 65 pts
WPG – 20 GR – 65 pts
TOR – 22 GR – 65 pts
WSH – 22 GR – 63 pts
- Basically Panthers have a 22 game season with 2 mulligans to work with, keep pace/outpoint the others and make those games in hand count and they are in. (If WSH wins, they are even keel and have a 22 game season with the other 3 teams for two spots, If OTT wins, I think they are of no concern to us for now), and we dont even want to talk/think of Scenerio 3/4…. The 3 point game….

More on the Panthers at the deadline, this time from Puck Daddy:
Florida Panthers
The Panthers have been fading of late, but that’s directly tied to injuries on their back end. Jason Garrison missed four games with a bum ankle. Ed Jovanovski missed 14 games but is nearly back after a broken hand last month. Dmitry Kulikov has been out since Jan. 23 but is expected back next month. He was in the midst of a career offensive year when he went down.
The Panthers should also get back Marco Sturm shortly, although who knows for what reason (3 points in 28 games). The wild card: Scottie Upshall, who had sports hernia surgery but whom coach Kevin Dineen said won’t be in the lineup until he resembles the “real deal” again.

Did we see that version of Upshall that we might recognize him as such?
