Florida Panthers Prospect Roundup: February 27, 2012

Now that the NHL trade deadline has passed, it's time for some prospects news. This week, Kyle Rau starts scoring again, Nick Bjugstad joins the injured college prospect list, the Rampage fight for higher playoff seeding, and Quinton Howden & Jonathan Huberdeau battle Vincent Trocheck for the CHL prospect scoring lead.

San Antonio Rampage 2, Peoria Rivermen 1

With Jon Matsumoto and Michal Repik called up, the Rampage dug in for a defensive game, even more so with Ben Bishop, leader in the AHL in wins and fifth in GAA going against Dov Grumet-Morris, who is fourth in the league in GAA. Five minutes into the game, Greg Rallo tipped in his 14 goal of the season into the net off Roman Derlyuk's rebound. The goal was Rallo's seventh point in eight games. The lead held into the third (the Rampage allowed 21 shots, a season high, in the second), where Scott Timmins scored his ninth goal of the season. James Wright was the only assist (he also assisted on the Rallo goal). About 20 seconds later, Grumet-Morris shutout was ruined, with Rivermen forward Derek Nesbitt scoring his 20th goal. Dov Grumet-Morris made 35 saves in the win.

San Antonio Rampage 2, Peoria Rivermen 1

Same opponent, same score, different goalies. The Rivermen looked for revenge after losing and gave Jacob Markstrom everything they had. Tyson Strachan played his first game as a visitor, after playing 141 games with Peoria for the last three seasons. It took 30 minutes for one of these teams to score, as Rivermen forward Chris Bruton scored his first AHL goal. Three minutes into the third the Rampage tied the game up. Bracken Kearns ended a 1-24 powerplay drought with his 15th goal, with Colby Robak and Bill Thomas (who was originally credited with the goal) getting the assists. Six minutes later, Greg Rallo scored his 15th goal of the season, assisted by Kearns and Thomas. Rallo has four goals, eight points in his last nine games. Jacob Markstrom was fantastic in net, making 40 saves in his first win since December 31st.

Milwaukee Admirals 3, San Antonio Rampage 1

The Rampage's three game winning streak was snapped, as the team's only goal came from Jon Matsumoto. The goal was San Antonio's first 5-on-3 powerplay goal, which tied the game at one in the second period. Bill Thomas and Greg Rallo were credited with the assists. For Thomas, it was his 11th point in nine games, and Rallo's ninth in ten games. The Admirals would score two more in the third, the final being an empty netter, making Admiral goaltender Jeremy Smith, 6-0 against the Rampage. Dov Grumet-Morris was in net, saving 25 shots. The game was also a milestone for two players , as Sean Sullivan played his 300th AHL game, and Bill Thomas's 166th game with the Rampage, the fourth most in team history.
