Tuesday Caterwaul: Panthers GameDay Open Forum
In the 12-year history of the Southeast, there have been five seasons where only the division winner made the playoffs. While it’s impossible to tell if that will be the case this season, the bottom half of the Eastern Conference standings are tight enough that a team can’t rely on receiving help from other teams.

Why last night rocked:
- Unless you've got PHX forwards Martin Hanzal and Ray Whitney lingering on your fantasy squad, not much at all to celebrate from a Florida perspective
Why last night jonesed:
- TOR over EDM, 6-3; Leafs now 6-1-1 over last eight, Kessel 2nd overall with 29 goals; face the Jets in Winnipeg this evening
Panthers Playoff Update:
- FLA did not play; playoff odds down 0.5 to 76.7% per Sports Club Stats
Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla, beyond the obvious:
- NJ at NYR, 7 p.m.
- NYI at PHI, 7
- PIT at MTL, 7:30
- STL at OTW, 7:30
- LA at TB, 7:30 (NBCSP)
- TOR at WPG, 8:30
Next up for the Cats:
- Tonight from Washington; check up on the opposition at Japers' Rink & Kings of Leonsis. LBC Game Thread gets underway at 6:30.
Did you know:
- C Nicklas Backstrom - traditionally a PantherSlayer with 29 points (13 on the PP) in 28 career games vs FLA - will miss his 15th match since early January as concussion symptoms keep him on the shelf indefinitely.
Monday’s Organizational Transactions:
- San Antonio signed G Rejean Beauchemin to PTO prior to 11-game road trip.
Monday's NHL Waiver Wire
To waivers:
- Zach Hamill (BOS)
- Andrew Murray (SJ)
- Anthony Stewart (CAR)

am i crazy for thinking this? i truly believe the second place team in the SE takes the 8th and final playoff spot. currently ottawa is holding it, and they are just 2 points up on the Panthers but having played four more games than us.
i think it’s very likely that Ottawa doesn’t get in and that spot goes to FLA/WAS/TB – all this “only one spot for our division” talk is WAY too early.
anything could happen at this point. I think in another ten games we’ll have a better handle on this but it is entirely possible that only one SE team will get in or maybe FL / Wash / Wpg will all get hot and get in. Panthers need to keep picking up points and they should be OK. They are on pace to get in either way (right now). Panthers are on pace to finish with 95 points. Ottawa is on pace to finish with 91.

of course i’m hoping we win the division. you’re totally right that its possible only one SE team gets in, but there is so much talk as though that’s definitely the case. not yet my friends.
but, like you said. just keep getting points. take care of our own business.

Pretty glad we continue to face a depleted Capitals club. They have Ovi back, but now Laich is out.
Must win is putting it lightly.

It would really great to win tonight but it’s still too early for “must wins” If Washington wins they are only up a point with the Panthers holding a game in hand to potentially jump back ahead. A win tonight would be key. Beating the Caps twice in this short time span will show the Panthers mean business about winning the division.

this is spot on. not a must-win, yet. but quite a confidence boost and quite a message to the Caps we ain’t backin down like Panthers teams of old….
by alterego6487 on Feb 7, 2012 10:14 AM EST up reply actions
I don’t think it’s ever too early for must wins. It’s 2 points now or 2 points two weeks from now. It’s still two points against a divisional opponent. Call it what you want, but we need this win.
Steve Diaz
Twitter - @sdiaz6215
Every game is a must win. Its two points you’ll never have a chance to get again. I personally don’t want to be in the business of makin up points. I want to be setting the pace.
agreed on the pace setting but calling this a must win with 30 games left in a race between two barely above average teams is a little bit off the mark imo. it would be a big win and a needed win but it’s not a must win. The Panthers could lose the rest of their games against the Caps and still make the playoffs if they win the majority of their other games.
121 days until Prometheus
The problem is too many ifs in the equation. I expect the worst to happen, being none of the ifs happen. I’ve seen to many late season slumps for a mediocre team to make the playoffs. An that’s part of why this IS a must win. Panthers have a better chance of pickin up two points against a mediocre team, than the top five or seven teams, or even a more veteran mediocre team that might surge. A team like the Panthers needs to be those below them in the standings every game.
Nah, let’s keep saying that a game, any game, is “not really a must win”. We can just make up points later on. I mean, 2008-2009 will never happen again!! Thankfully the NHL lets teams have make up points at the end of the year.
I never understood how can you “make up” points. It’s either 2 points now and 2 points later, or no points now, and 2 points later. Personally, I would rather have 4 points than 2, no matter who it is against. The season offers 164 points for a team, no more, no less. Once you lose out on 2 points, you can never get them back. Besides, it’s better to have the luxury of being able to lose a few games than worrying about getting enough points late in the season to avoid Montreal embarrassing themselves in the playoffs.
No you’re right you can never get them back but you have 30 games left to pick up more points than Washington picks up. It’s not like the Caps aren’t going to lose again if they win tonight. Of course I want them to win tonight but there are a lot of games left. Sorry but “must win” in game 52 of the season is overly dramatic. Cats lose tonight and win their game in hand they are back in first. The same scenario is going to play out all season.
121 days until Prometheus
But that’s expecting Washington, Tampax, or whoever to continue playing at subpar levels. These are teams that have played together longer than the Cats, and quite possibly can turn it around suddenly. You need to take the points when you have the opportunity and not hope things work out in your favor later. Its about controlling your own destiny, not letting others do it for you.
agreed, still not a must win in the true sense to me that’s all. All for them taking the division by the throat just hasn’t happened and I don’t think any of these teams are going to do it. Looks like this going right down to the wire.
121 days until Prometheus
It wouldn’t have to if they could find a way to string wins together instead of having to bounce back after a loss.

I second that. The Panthers have lost a lot of OT/SO games but it’s better than straight up losing like the other teams do. Toronto, Ottawa, and New Jersey are not going anywhere anytime soon and the gap between first and last is only 10 points. The Cats hopefully have 1 long (5+) win streak in them somewhere.

I’m starting to look forward to the trade deadline. The suspense is killing me. Could the Panthers actually be buyers this time around? I don’t think Tallon is going to break the bank, but if the team can get a finisher or a top-two center, I think they should.
deadline time is always fun. I think this year is going to be exciting as there a lot of good teams this season with a chance to win it all so there should be some interesting moves.

Dave Bolland from Chicago would be F’n AMAZING to grab..
Either Santorelli or Bergy and a 3rd rounder for him, He’d be that second line center we need and Dineen could reunite Kopecky, Bolland and Versteeg from back in 2010. Gives us 2 lines that can chip in frequently.

Both.. but clearly the trade would upgrade Florida second line along with still giving chicago some assets.

Doesnt mean tallon cant make an offer or even sweeten the deal in some way. He’s not one of those guys that people are going to demand something outrageous like Huberdeau and could still help.
If Chicago takes Bergy they could be getting a repeat of last season, or he could just prove that was a one time show. Both would take risks I guess.

which is why Bowman wouldnt want to do it.
Tallon’s winding down on the whole crazy immediate overhaul thing, next year we should see at least one of our OHL prospects join the team, then after that a somewhat steady flow if he keeps the quality drafts coming. I think he’s done amalgamating other GM’s guys into his own team, other than a few free agent signings this summer and deadline deals, we might be done with the big trades.

Anyone else feeling a loss up in WAS? We really need to be playing better hockey on the road, even though we thankfully have many more left at home. Usually, when I’m about to doubt this team, they come up with another big one. We just need to get in the dance. I don’t see this gritty group as a 1 and done. Find a way to make it in!
by The real CatscratchFever on Feb 7, 2012 10:43 AM EST reply actions
the Caps aren’t playing any better so if they were playing someone else I’d probably feel more like a loss was coming. The Panthers were pretty bad in Tampa bay so I am expecting them to play a good game tonight.
I really want to see Weiss step up and have a big game. 6 points in the last 16 games isn’t good enough.
121 days until Prometheus
I am worried that the Panthers are in trouble and tonite will confirm it. Sturm’s injury is a big loss because with him in the line-up, the Panther’s would have barely enough fire-power to score at least three goals a game on most nights. Our goalies and defense aren’t quite good enough if we can’t score more. I was hoping that when Sturm and Upshall came back, that we would start playing like we did at the beginning of the year (after the first week or two). It was starting to look like that might happen against Washington last time as we had long stretches where we held the puck in their zone. We can still barely get past the weaker teams, but we aren’t good enough against the upper echelon. In short, we need more scoring or this team will finish just out of the playoffs again. We need to be buyers and as soon as possible. A package with Repik, and maybe Skille, or Santorelli, might be able to get us a second line player. Actually we need two players of that caliber, and we need them now!
sturm hasn’t played barely at all this year, neither did Upshall. their injuries are not the reason we are in trouble.
by alterego6487 on Feb 7, 2012 10:53 AM EST up reply actions
I think you are overstating a bit but you are right for the most part. When the overall depth takes a hit it shows up in games in the little things that lead to wins and losses especially with a team like the Panthers who always seem to win or lose by a goal. If Skille can come back the loss of Sturm will be felt less.

The Panthers have lost 12 of 19 games without Sturm in the line-up. Hes a great penalty killer and defensive player in general. He does the little things, he will be missed.
by The real CatscratchFever on Feb 7, 2012 11:01 AM EST reply actions
not bagging on Sturm he has been missed but while he’s been out so have a lot of other people and that is what’s taken a toll on the team. If only Sturm and one other guy was out his absence would not be felt as much but when you have up to seven forwards hurt at the same time then it’s going to show up on the ice. Even if most of them are lower line players.
121 days until Prometheus
It was fascinating when everyone was out, being able to watch our play improve incrementally as they filtered back. But not having Sturm and Upshall leaves a big hole on a team that doesn’t have any Gaborik’s , Malkin’s, or Ovechkin’s that can make individual efforts to score. The Panthers, lacking true first line stars, has to depend upon overall pressure, grit and determination to get their goals. Versteeg and Fleishmann are improvements over what we had (except for Horton and Jokinen) over the last few years. But we still lack a first-line center and need a lot of second and third liners to compete (two more than we currently have).
I think our second and third line depth is alright especially if they acquire a first line type player at the deadline.Guys like Matty, Sammy, Bergy and Goc have played pretty well lately
I doubt that Tallon does much at trade deadline. Team compeyotive despiteinjuries.
The splash will be in the offseason and draft. I bet with the expiring contracts of strum and Sammy that Tallon will go after two current captains. Mr Nash ad Mr Parise. Neither captains will be moved until draft. Too much money and teams wont overpay to move any sooner.
I can see Backstrom in the panthers future though or even semin ( if caps tank it by deadline as McPhee will have to make a drastic move)

Forget Nash, Parise, Semin, Backstrom, Sidney Crosby, The Ghost of Gretzkys Career and anyone else of that nature, the chances of that trade happening are .00001%.
Go after a guy like David Jones, he scored 27 last year and was on par for mid 30s the year before. He’s had some injuries with the Avs and Sherman(being the idiot he is) isn’t acting on him because he’s ‘given up hope’ so to speak. Avs are looking like sellers now, too.
Remember that JM Liles was traded by Sherman for a 2nd round pick, and he was still under contract for a few years. What’ll he move Jones for? A 3rd and a steak dinner?

Take a look at PA Parenteau, kick the tires on Lee Stempniak, Grabovski has produced well. Maybe Andrei Kostitsyn. Maybe they work out, maybe they dont. But if their teams dont resign them, maybe theyre worth a shot. Better taking a chance on a few of these guys than doing something drastic for Parish of Nash and having that not work out.
I still believe Flash can score 30 goals, he’s on a pace for 27. Versteeg can easily hit 30 goals, or more. Weiss is a 20 goal scorer. We havent even seen what Upshall is good for. Give Santorelli another year and see what happens. Extend Samuelsson if possible.
What do we expect out of Huberdeau? Maybe 15-20 as a rookie, then working up from there. So theres some more scoring for you. It would be nice to have a 40 goal scorer, but maybe not for a few seasons.

I wish Sam Gagner wasn’t on this tear he’s been on, he’s always been a favorite of mine. I’d say take the risk on hemsky and lowball them but he’ll be a free agent soon enough if hes not resigned so either grab him and kick the tires and resign or wait until hes avail to sign.
Eric Cole who made a huge mistake signing with montreal could be a decent pick up if they dont ask too much which you know they will. Hell going back to Edmonton I’d even take a risk on grabbing Ryan Whitney for the right price, when healthy he’s a great d-man and could take a little weight off of Campbells back without creating the issue that he faced in Chicago.

I know it’s not anything but a pipe dream, and the guy probably will never leave Detroit, but Darren Helm. The guy’s work ethic is incredible.
The Florida Panthers have become Chicago's retirement home. This is oddly fitting.
My feelings on the Florida Panthers' AHL affiliate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cR-WiGKZtg
Welll, looking at that list.
Parise is a UFA – which is why I said I would not be surprised to see Tallon try to sway him. Plus he WANTS to be a captain.
Semin – I would say no. Enigma. He is too hot and cold. He is also UFA
Backstrom – he will be moved if Caps dont make the playoffs. They need to reconfigure their lines then.
Honestly though none of those guys are going to be moved until the season is over. Those are blockbuster trades that happen at a draft or before it. Not at the trade deadline.
I really dont see the Panthers doing much at the deadline excpet pickup a journeyman defenseman (just sign mcabe already instead of throwing away pick! stepup over a journeyman)
