Wednesday Caterwaul: Panthers Open Forum
Let's set the record straight. Tuesday night's game between the Capitals and Florida Panthers was not a playoff game. It may have looked like one and felt like one, but the Caps still need to be one point better than the Panthers in their final 29 games before they can stake that claim.

Why last night rocked:
- LA over TB, 3-1; will that realistically wrap the Bolts' season?
- STL over OTW, 3-1; Sens: 7 goals in last five games
Why last night jonesed:
- WPG over TOR, 2-1 (REG); call this a split-decision thanks to regulation victory
- NJ over NYR, 1-0 (REG); Brodeur stops 30, Clarkson with GWG on man advantage
- MTL over PIT, 3-2 (SO); Plekanec nets shootout winner
Panthers Playoff Update:
- FLA lost to WSH 0-4; playoff odds down 9.4 to 67.2% per Sports Club Stats
Why tonight is a (not so) Big Deal in SoFla:
- BOS at BUF, 7:30 p.m. (NBC-SP)
Next up for the Cats:
- Hosting Los Angeles tomorrow; LBC Game Thread at 7.
Did you know:
- Florida is 3-for-14 on the power play since February 1; penalty kill has allowed 2 goals during 7 TS in those four games
Tuesday’s Organizational Transactions:
- None; San Antonio had a mighty fine visit to Hamilton
Tuesday’s NHL Waiver Wire
Cleared waivers:
- Zach Hamill (BOS)
- Andrew Murray (SJ)
- Anthony Stewart (CAR)

"And a top-two center."
True, but unfortunately that is very unrealistic
A Big Move?????
First off I am totally against Club Red and feel for the people that have had those seats from day 1 to just be tossed aside. With this said I think that they have to make a big trade. Why, not because they may want to but for business purposes. How bad would it look to unveil Club Red (or Dread) if the team does not make the playoffs again? Sure they might make the playoffs with this roster and never ending injuries. However, I just do not think they can take that chance. Fortunately we are well stocked in the farm and can absorb a hit to some younger players. I do not see them trading Huberdeau but anyone else might be in play.
In the end it is all about money isn’t it?
What does everyone else think?
Making a trade so Yormarks plan looks good is stupid(not directing that at you, just saying it in general). Tallon would never go for it, let MYs plan die like it should have on the drawing board months ago

maybe in years before, but Tallon isnt green. He went through hard times making CHI a contender, he isnt going to put the team back another season to keep MY happy.
And if Yormark knew better he would have implemented this Club Red deal once FLA was a playoff team, not while things were up in the air. We expect the roster as is to be a playoff team next year given less injuries and Hubs, so no trade would be necessary(in theory). Club Red opens next year anyways, when we actually have expectations to be a playoff team.

Counting chickens before they hatch- Theoretically speaking- if Club Dead was created/implemented after the Panthers become a playoff contender (with expectation for the year following) then removing STH from the 3 sections needed to build this monstrosity would be even more disastrous- where would you move STH to if (in dream land) the lower bowl equal seats are already occupied. If this was going to happen, it had to occur now when the arena could offer “equivalent” seats to pissed off STH at a discount. In years to come the prices we are paying for tix now will end- especially looking at the highway robbery playoff ticket prices are being presented (if you don’t renew ST).
I am in no way defending this- just sayin
I hereby predict Captain Mike Weaver #43 will score 6G 20A -RCR 0G10A 1/17

They already moved me from 102 to 119 same seat and gave me a 50% discount for next season renewal. No I am not happy about it and I think MY is a scum bag. If those seats are full ever, I will be amazed. Should look great on TV! Not!!

Anyone know what the deal is with Clemmer and first shots lately?
Can we “fool” him into thinking that warm ups are the 1st shot or something?
We’re excellent when we score first and the opposite when scored upon first. It’s like the team loses confidence when they don’t score first.
Seeing Red since 1994.
Something somewhat positive....
So since the Dec 8th win against Boston the team has gone 8-9-7… (AKA 8-16)
Scary as it is, that in the next 24 games will put the team at 82 points with 6 games to go… not good enough…. but it gives a small basis for comparison. Say in the final 30 games they go 10-10-10…. not good enough, but enough to get to 89 points…. and I am of the belief that 94 to 96 gets them there. So with just a little improvement, it is not hard to see the team going 14-8-8 for 36 points and 95 total… which should make it close. Heck even a 12-6-12 record lands 36 points… so not out of the question.
The thing is they make the road so much easier if they can win the games against OTT (2), WAS (2), TOR (2), WPG (2) and also have very winable games with ANA, EDM, CAR (4), MTL (2), BUF, NYI (2), CBJ. This represents 20 of the 30 games and are all games they can do it. The other 10 are tougher teams I feel, that the Oct/Nov Panthers could beat….
With this in mind: COME BACK OCT/NOV Panthers, we need you…
actually November / early December was when the Panthers peaked. October they were 6-4-1 which was pretty decent.and that clip would likely get them in so I’ll get on board with the October Panthers coming back. Don’t see the November Panthers coming back this season.
Agree with you that they need to come up with some combination of wins and otl’s that add up to 36 points. Although right now Ottawa is on pace for an 88 point season so if teams like Winnipeg and Tampa continue to lollygag then the Panthers could get in with a lower total.

sorry Ottawa is on pace for 89 points (fumble fingers!)
projected EC points totals:

So, 9 games remain before the deadline, 19 days.
LAK, NJD-NYI OTT, WSH, ANA, MIN, CAR-MTL
Realistically, if we want to be ‘buyers’, we need a 6-3-0 record, that would put us at 71 points by the 27th. In the final 21 games we’d need about 24 points to get into the postseason safely, so about .500 hockey, which we’re good at. But we need to get to the deadline first, playoffs second.
If we drop both games vs WSH & OTT, things arent looking good. If we blow the NYI game on the back to back, not good. If we drop the last back to back, we’re pretty much sellers.

Panthers are home for 6 of those 9, btw.
Heres what WSH is looking at:
9 games, 18 days.
WPG, NYR-SJS, FLA-TBL, CAR, OTT, MTL-TOR
WSH has 3 of those games at home, 6 on the road including the Florida back to back. If they go 4-5-0, we still have a chance at the division.

Watching last night’s game, I got the feeling that there was no way they were coming back, and that was after one period. Even though there are a lot of new players on this team, with each passing game, the feeling that I am watching the same teams I’ve seen over the past 11 years grows stronger.
I understand that the Panthers were not “suppose to” make the playoffs this year; however, their play over the first 30+ games put me in a playoff mood. I feel like this team has to make the playoffs. They need to get the monkey off their back, and introduce our players to some sort of success. I think if the Panthers made the playoffs this year, Weiss, Guds, etc., will learn to like the taste of success, and it will raise their level of play for next year. I’m afraid that if they continue to mess all over ourselves the rest of the season, it will drag everyone down: “We couldn’t even win with vet players who have won Stanley Cups before”. I know the players are “professionals”, but I know that would being me down, and having experienced that same feeling every year for the past 11 years would just kill me.
What all that rambling basically says is that I am disappointed in the team as of late. I am tired of watching them lose games. My uncle is a Rangers fan, and he actually had to quit watching hockey because the stresses were killing him (his doctor actually told him that). After 11 years, I can understand completely – this is no longer fun.
Real stress is having to watch your team in the playoffs. I can tell you that as great as it is to make the finals it is equally stressful watching those games. I know there are far worse problems.
The sad part of this season were the non stop injuries. Early in the season we were healthy and messed very well. Injury after injury after injury later has really killed our chemistry. If somehow we could get healthy we could easily win the SE.
Yeah I can attest to that, checked the net for the score after the first and figured that was all. Feels bad to admit, but just had a feeling that it was not going to happen last night.
I am still VERY optimistic that we can do it… after firing off that list of 20 games we can/should win, I got a better feeling about what COULD happen.
Its funny how sports are, being a fan from the get-go we were treated to some amazing success in the early years, some fun teams in the Bure era and then the let downs since. I was just happy that we had a pretty much reset roster this year and figured a 10 to 7th finish would be OK, with a BIG year next season. But after getting what we got in the early stages, it feels like we have to get into the playoffs. After the way the started out, it shows it coudl be done, so it would be a little bit of a let down should they not pull it off.
This team could do some damage I think in the playoffs if healthy. But honestly, (and it is a little scary saying it) if they just make it to the playoffs it will probably feel like the biggest feat in franchise history… and that says alot about a team that made the finals in 96…. but this playoff monkey on the back has become a heck of a weight…. It will not sting to lose the first round, even though I think this team could/would win a round or two.
One step at at time though right: Make the playoffs (Last time in 2000), win a playoff game (Last time in 1997), win a playoff series (Last time 1996), and so on….

I think the biggest thing for me is to capture the hearts of South Florida more than anything. I mean this season has made fans out of people that I took to the game and it means a lot to the many of you who sat through the 10 years. The sliver of hope has been put under the microscope and every decision the team makes from the top to the bottom has the fans thinking “DON’T BLOW IT!” The 2011-12 team is at the point now where they will surpass some of the worst teams in franchise history and 2006-07 Blackhawks.

People need to stop comparing this organization to the Blackhawks. There were a lot more people who influenced those decisions there who are with other franchises now. Not just Tallon. Its two entirely different types of markets.

I like a lot of what you are saying SASK but they never really impressed me to the point where I thought the playoffs were or should be considered a given. They put together a nice November / first week of December but even in October and the rest of December they were barely above .500. There have been no long winning streaks (something even crappy teams are able to do once in awhile but not this team) and I knew that VWF could not keep up that point a game pace they were all on especially Weiss who goes into long stretches were he produces very little offense every year. Even when healthy there are still some holes on this team but the injuries have definitely taken a toll and may indeed cost them the playoffs in a year that looks to be a down one for a lot of Eastern Conference teams. I think all the days spent in first leading a poor SE raised expectations a little bit too much. If they can keep playing good at home and turn things around a bit on the road were they have been awful lately then they still have a pretty good chance at the playoffs but unless they get the 3 seed it’s hard to see them being anything but cannon fodder for the likes of the Rangers or Bruins in round one.
120 days until Prometheus
Agreed, would want to avoid NYR or BOS that is FOR SURE….
I agree too that injuries have taken a toll. I think one injury that was kind of underrated was the Skille one. I liked what he was bringing and think getting him back full time and healthy could have some impact.
I do also think that they need one expiring UFA contract that can put a few goals in, but also a move by addition that will light a fire under the team… I don’t expect or want any big time player (Carter, Ryan, etc) preferring instead some of the UFAs I listed last night. I am 100% behind keeping the prospects and building a contender.
Gotta agree with you Mario, just as it stands this team and season has been a joy compared to the past 10 years, no matter what happens. And I think once the team gets rolling in the years to come, it will indeed catch the hearts of South FLA.
The nice thing about the standings is I think we can catch and remove OTT, just have to hold off those behind us.
BTW, I am sure my wife is getting driven nuts by what this season is doing to me… ha ha ha

Love him or hate him.. Ovie is heating up, Vokie is playing better, and Backstrom when healthy is one of the best centers in the league this season. Cap that with Wideman having a career year on defense and it’s looking like the Caps are pulling their shaky season together in time for the stretch while the Cats for the past (nearly) 2 months have been flopping like the fish out of water with considerable injuries and players returning to the IR after rushing a return etc etc.. not to mention the ever popular “minor knee surgery for all” that we’ve adopted..
Not to try to bring everyone down but the way things are looking it may be time for everyone to brace themselves.

Sure, but until they put together a winning streak they can be shaken with ease. They have the right weapons, they just need the goaltending to carry them through the first half of a game. Therefore, thats when other teams need to do the damage.

Realistically, I think WAS will win the division. Ovie is returning to form, Vokoun is a 2nd half goalie, and Backstrom + Green in the mix is going to make them difficult to beat out.
And realistically, there is no way we should miss the playoffs. Ottawa is tanking, we should have their spot very soon (especially with their 4 games at hand), and WPG shouldnt make it, especially now with the concussion that Kane has.
None of those other teams not already in the playoffs are good enough, its that simple
Soooo...
