Florida Panthers Recall D Colby Robak From AHL San Antonio

Cats recall defenseman Colby Robak, bloating their roster to 23 players. Possible trade incoming or is another blueliner hurt?

The Florida Panthers recalled 22 year-old Colby Robak from AHL San Antonio on Saturday; he leads all Rampage defensemen in points with 19 and shots with 82. A season ago Robak was scoreless in his three games with the Panthers, averaging 13:34 minutes. With San Antonio, Robak was fifth in scoring, leading all defensemen with 39 points, and second in assists with 30. Like recent callup Jacob Markstrom, Robak was a second-round selection (46th overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, and currently in the final year of his entry level contract.

With both Markstrom and Mike Santorelli now on the Cats' active list, the roster is topped out with 23 players (13 forwards, 7 defensemen, and 3 goaltenders). Is a possible trade on the horizon for the Panthers, who currently sit 13th in the Eastern Conference, but only 5 points out of first place of the Southeast Division? Or is someone on the backend injured? Captain Ed Jovanovski is out with a knee injury, and hasn't played since January. Longtime prospect Michael Caruso is also out with a broken wrist.

In three of his four seasons with the WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings, Robak played alongside Philadelphia Flyers forward Brayden Schenn. In 2009-10 (his final year in Canadian juniors) Robak scored 66 points and won the WHL plus/minus award with a plus-56. He also made the second All-Star team. Full career numbers here.

Release via the Rampage:

Robak, 22, has played in 52 games for San Antonio this season registering 19 points (3-16-19) and 46PIM. He made his National Hockey League debut with Florida last season, appearing in three games, while averaging 13:34 TOI/per game.

The Dauphin, Manitoba native, was drafted by Florida in the second round (46th overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
