Florida Panthers left wing Jonathan Huberdeau was named as one of the finalists for the Calder Memorial Trophy today. Also nominated for rookie-of-the-year honors are Brendan Gallagher of the Montreal Canadiens and Brandon Saad of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Huberdeau played in all 48 games this season and finished with 31 points (14G/17A) which was tied him for tops among league rookies with Nail Yakupov of the Edmonton Oilers and was the second-highest total on the team behind Tomas Fleischmann.
Gallagher finished with 28 points in 44 games and his 15 goals were second-best among rookies behind Yakupov's 17 markers. Saad collected 27 points (10G/17A) in 46 games for the league-leading Blackhawks.
A case can be made for all three players winning but it sure would be nice for one of our own to walk away with the hardware especially after the Cats poor regular season performance.
