Florida Panthers' 2013 Unrestricted Free Agents As Contracts Come To A Close

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

The Cats have nine unrestricted free agents coming off the books this June. Here's a report on all of them.

Andre Deveaux

San Antonio Rampage (AHL)

League GP G A PTS +/- PIM EV PP SH SOG SH%
AHL 46 7 7 14 -13 56 4 3 0 52 13.5

Andre Deveaux had back-to-back 20 goal seasons before coming to San Antonio, where he scored his lowest point totals since 2006-07 (and he spent part of that season in the ECHL). Brought in for toughness and a veteran presence for the AHL roster, Deveaux finished 14th in scoring and fourth in PIMs (56 PIM being his career lowest).

Will he be resigned? The Panthers need depth at forward, and a player with 31 games of NHL experience and only two points isn't what the roster needs.

Brian Foster

Cincinnati Cyclones (ECHL)

AHL 7 308 1 3 0 0 15 2.92 167 152 .910
ECHL 32 1796 19 7 4 0 80 2.67 859 779 .907

The Cincinnati Cyclones' number one goaltender, Foster has yet to improve off his promising 2010-11 season in the ECHL. He took over backup duties in the AHL after Jacob Markstrom's promotion, and didn't do a bad job as the backup. Of course, it was only seven games.

Will he be resigned? Depends on who the organization wants as backup in San Antonio.

Dov Grumet-Morris

San Antonio Rampage (AHL)

AHL 43 2311 12 22 5 2 125 3.24 1294 1169 .903

Signed to an NHL two-way contract after saving San Antonio's 2011-12 season, Grumet-Morris failed to repeat the same success last season, finishing the campaign with his worst career AHL save percentage and goals-against average. However, he was playing with a very depleted roster toward the end of the season.

Will he be resigned? He already signed an extension with San Antonio, so don't count on it.

Greg Rallo

San Antonio Rampage (AHL)

AHL 66 23 17 40 -19 36 15 6 2 167 13.8

Rallo led the Rampage in shots and goals, and finished second in scoring. The forward-depleted Panthers used him for ten games, where he scored his first career goal.

Will he be resigned? Rallo has scored 20+ goals in three straight seasons and was named an alternate captain for the Rampage. There's a good chance he signs an AHL contract and becomes their next captain.

Eric Selleck

San Antonio Rampage (AHL)

NHL 2 0 1 1 2 17 0 0 0 2 0.0
AHL 60 5 11 16 0 181 11 0 0 83 6.0

Eric Selleck led the Rampage in penalty minutes for the second season in a row. Beside being a decent penalty killer, there's little else he brings to the table.

Will he be resigned? I hope not. Selleck has played 16 minutes in the NHL and has 17 career PIMs. He was suspended in his first career game and has a reputation for headhunting. STAY AWAY!

Tyson Strachan

#23 / Defenseman / Florida Panthers

6-3

Oct 30, 1984

League GP G A PTS +/- PIM EV PP SH SOG SH%
NHL 38 0 4 4 -13 40 0 0 0 42 0.0
AHL 50 3 14 17 -4 41 2 1 0 81 3.7

Strachan was a replacement-level defenseman for the Panthers last season, averaging a career high 18:58 minutes a game. He also scored a career-high four points.

Will he be resigned? Depends on what the Panthers want to do with Erik Gudbranson. If they send him to the AHL, Strachan might get signed. Just don't count on it being a one-way deal.

Jose Theodore

#60 / Goalie / Florida Panthers

5-11

Sep 13, 1976

League GP MIN W L OTL SO GA GAA SA SV SV%
NHL 15 766 4 6 3 0 42 3.29 391 349 .893

After surprising many and having his best season in years during 2011-12, Jose Theodore proved once again how unpredictable goaltending can be in 2013. A groin injury cut his season short, causing his numbers to be their lowest since his (relatively recent) seasons with Colorado.

Will he be resigned? With Scott Clemmensen signed for another year, it's not likely. Unless the Panthers can find someone to take Clemmer, or have him play in the AHL, Theodore isn't coming back.

Stephen Weiss

#9 / Center / Florida Panthers

5-11

190

Apr 03, 1983

League GP G A PTS +/- PIM EV PP SH SOG SH%
NHL 17 1 3 4 -13 25 0 1 0 19 5.3

Florida's all-time leader in games played, Weiss had his worst season in 2013 thanks to season ending wrist surgery. His 5.3 shooting percentage was the lowest of his career.

Will he be resigned? Dale Tallon still has hope, but Weiss turns 31 in April and with the Panthers' limited cap space, it might be best to move on.

Nolan Yonkman

San Antonio Rampage (AHL)

6-5

218

D

Apr 1, 1981

League GP G A PTS +/- PIM EV PP SH SOG SH%
NHL 7 0 0 0 -1 11 0 0 0 4 0.0
AHL 71 0 7 7 -34 93 0 0 0 58 0.0

Captain of the Rampage, Yonkman has scored only three goals in his 193 games with San Antonio. The fan favorite has played eight games with the Panthers, and hasn't looked like an NHLer.

Will he be resigned? Not on an NHL contract, but could sign an AHL deal to stay in San Antonio.
