Florida Panthers & NHL Trade Deadline - '11
Post-deadline dust begins to settle for Panthers
Wanted to take a look at where the various pieces/parts involved in - or around - the Cats' performance at the NHL trading deadline happened to have landed, now that two weeks have slipped by.
Being that the Florida Panthers are headed in a direction generally thought to be one of massive rebuilding - which placed them right in line with the specific needs of their trading partners - this list is not a critique of any one club's on-ice efforts or acquisition strategies, simply a "where are they now" primer.
To keep matters simple, we're not including draft picks nor prospects below the ECHL level; all will be covered in the off-season. Statistics through March 13th after the jump...
Panthers: Off-season variables, potential, and concerns created by the Trade Deadline
"We added a great number of picks and got younger and really solidified our future. The future is most important for us." These were the words from Florida Panthers GM Dale Tallon after the dust settled from Monday's busy Trade Deadline. He couldn't have been more right. It's all about the future. The moves he made have allowed for this upcoming summer to be vitally important, perhaps the most pivotal period in club history. With so many factors, ranging from the Sunrise Sports Entertainment's wallet, to the blueprint, to RFA's and UFA's, not to mention the upcoming CBA, the next few months have the potential to be incredibly beneficial to the success of the franchise, or horrifically tragic. While Tallon has set this team up for success with all of this potental money in the off-season, don't go buying your streamers and confetti just yet.
Tallon hijacks NHL newswires as Florida Panthers own 2011 Trade Deadline
It was a snoozer of a day for just about everyone but the Cats' front office as four bodies - and bundle of contract dollars - were shipped out of Sunrise in exchange for, well, let's call them "pieces" for now. More in-depth stuff coming up later today, but to quickly summarize the afternoon's welcome local implementation of the nuclear option:
- F Radek Dvorak, 5th-round pick to ATL for RW Niclas Bergfors and LW Patrick Rissmiller
- D Dennis Wideman to WAS for C Jake Hauswirth, 3rd-round pick
- D Bryan Allen to CAR for LW Sergei Samsonov
- F Chris Higgins to VAN for D Evan Oberg, 3rd-round pick
Perhaps most intriguing is who was not dealt: Stephen Weiss, David Booth, Marty Reasoner, and Tomas Vokoun all remain with the club or at least until mere minutes before the Entry Draft opens.
Again, we'll have some op/ed in a bit, but here's coach Peter DeBoer's Florida Panthers roster heading into Tuesday's game in Carolina:
Forwards: Bergfors, Steve Bernier, Booth, Darcy Hordichuk, Hugh Jessiman, Kenndal McArdle, Reasoner, Michal Repik, Samsonov, Mike Santorelli, Bill Thomas, Scott Timmins, Weiss.
Defense: Joe Callahan, Jason Garrison, Dmitry Kulikov, Alexander Sulzer, Mike Weaver
Yikes. Obviously there will be a recall or four over the next few hours, but what you see above is called a "rebuild". Not a Mike Keenan or Jacques Martin-style Band-Aid-and-Stumpel "rebuild".
We were promised the real deal, and it has arrived. Buckle up.
LBC's Florida Panthers / 2011 NHL Trade Deadline of Doom - Live Open Thread
Welcome to the third annual Litter Box Deadline of Doom: a day-long celebration of sixth-round conditional picks and TSN's unequivocal love of them.
Things being what they are today, we like draft picks a whole bunch as well; a positive development, since we're likely to witness a few head south to the mean streets of One Panther Parkway, replacing what's arguably the best group of expiring contracts in the league. Jacques Martin Giveth, and all. Transaction Bliss - or at least our warped version of it - awaits after the jump...
Florida Panthers Trade Deadlines Past: Jacques Martin
The Panthers are not known for being particularly active at the NHL trade deadline. Most of the team's General Managers have preferred to make their moves around the draft (see the Luongo deals). However, the Panthers have made some significant Deadline Day deals and some insignificant ones. While Dale Tallon threatens to make this the busiest Panthers trade deadline ever, we're going to take a look at Panthers Deadline Week deals of the past.
General Manager: Jacques Martin
Deadline:: March 4, 2009
- Noah Welch and a third round draft pick in 2009 to Tampa for Steve Eminger (Andrej Nestrasil after pick traded to Detroit).
Eminger was a salary dump for the Lightning and an audition for the Panthers, who sent a player that was going to be released anyway.
Panthers Trade Deadline 2011: Is Reasoner next to be moved?
With Radek Dvorak and Cory Stillman now gone, the last member of the old "Century Village Line" Marty Reasoner sits in play. As the deadline inches closer, look for GM Dale Tallon to make a move that sends the 34-year old Reasoner to a contender. The veteran forward is most known for his PK prowess (Ranks first amongst FLA forwards for SH TOI with 171:43) and efficiency at the face-off dot (leading the Cats with a 54.3 FO%, which is good for 20th in the NHL), but he's currently on pace for 35 points, which would be a career best-- which makes him even more of a bargain at his $253,495 prorated cap hit.
Early rumours dictate that Reasoner could end up in Vancouver, but consider him a last minute option for a teams like Washington and Anaheim who need veteran help down the middle. He has reportedly expressed a desire to remain with the Panthers.
Florida Panthers Trade Deadlines Past: Randy Sexton
The Panthers are not known for being particularly active at the NHL trade deadline. Most of the team's General Managers have preferred to make their moves around the draft (see the Roberto Luongo deal). However, the Panthers have made some significant Deadline Day deals and some insignificant ones. While Dale Tallon threatens to make this the busiest Panthers trade deadline ever, we're going to take a look at Panthers Deadline Week deals of the past.
General Manager: Randy Sexton
Deadline: March 3, 2010
- Defensemen Dennis Seidenberg and Matt Bartkowski to Boston for forwards Craig Weller and Byron Bitz and a second round draft pick in 2010 (Alexander Petrovic).
- Defenseman Mathieu Roy from the Columbus Blue Jackets for forward Matt Rust.
- March 1: Defenseman Jordan Leopold to Pittsburgh for a second round draft pick in 2010 (Connor Brickley).
Interim General Manager Randy Sexton was Assistant General Manager under Jacques Martin. He was named Interim when Martin bolted to coach the Canadiens. Sexton started deadline work early, trading forward Dominic Moore to Montreal for a second round pick in 2011 on February 11. The Panthers were bad all season and it was widely speculated that Sexton would sell all of his one-year signings for draft picks. He did so, trading away Moore, Leopold and Seidenberg for picks and a couple of minor league players. The one roster player he brought in, Byron Bitz, played only a handful of games before being injured. He has yet to appear for the Panthers this season, and it appears that his time with the club is done, with Miami Herald reporter George Richards reporting recently that he "doesn't see him" around the practice facility anymore.
