Florida Panthers Prospect Roundup: February 5, 2012

One of these players in blue is a recent All-Star, the other is Scott Clemmensen.

Panthers prospect Colby Robak participated in three of the seven Skills Competitions in the buildup to the 2012 AHL All-Star Game. Robak - a defenseman - took part in the Fastest Skater, clocking as the slowest of the six at 14.401 seconds, and the Hardest Shot, where he had the second-best effort on the West (third overall) at 97.2 mph. The final event was the Breakaway Relay, where Robak skated in the third round, but failed to score on East goaltender Jeff Zatkoff. The West won the event 18-10. For the All-Star game itself, Robak scored zero points and went minus-one with zero shots on net.

Back in the real world he remains third in scoring for San Antonio, easily tops among all Rampage blueliners.

UND forward Knight "excited, fortunate" to be in Panthers organization

Corban Knight, center for the University of North Dakota. Knight was a fifth round selection of the Panthers in 2009. (Photos by Eric Classen/UND Athletics)

We recently had the pleasure of interviewing Florida Panthers NCAA prospect Corban Knight, currently the top centerman for the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. Knight, selected in the fifth round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by Florida, is in his junior year at UND and growing into the player the Panthers hoped he would become. After a great sophomore season in which he was the second-leading scorer for the Sioux and helped lead them to a Frozen Four appearance, Knight has continued to mature and refine his game, and despite missing three games this season he sits third in scoring on the team and has played some of his best hockey of late, picking up 2 assists in a back-to-back series this weekend against Wisconsin. Interview after the jump...

Florida Panthers Prospect Roundup: January 23, 2012

Jon Matsumoto didn't take long to make an impact for San Antonio with five points in three games with the Rampage.

In case you have forgotten, the Panthers acquired Jon Matsumoto and Mattias Lindstrom from the Carolina Hurricanes for Evgeni Dadonov and A.J. Jenks. Dadonov was a healthy scratch for San Antonio's matchup against Abbotsford and reportedly asked the organization for a trade, and Jenks has yet to score for the Rampage. Granted, he was one of the Rampage's best shootout players (3-0 with 2 game winners in the shootout).

Jon Matsumoto, the Charlotte Checkers leading scorer with 34 points (13G/21A), gives the Rampage roster much needed offensive help. He's scored 20 goals (30 in 2009-10) in every one of his full seasons in the AHL and brings the Rampage All-Star total to two. Mattias Lindstrom is a huge forward (6'3" and 212 pounds) currently playing for Tingsryds AIF in Sweden's second highest division, HockeyAllsvenskan. In 18 career games in Elitserien, Sweden's highest division, he only one point, a goal.

Florida Panthers Prospect Roundup: January 14, 2012

Ondrej Roman (33) was acquired by the organization for Angelo Esposito, who is mostly famous for being the guy the Panthers traded Kenndal McArdle for.

Been a while since you've seen one of these, but it's back! During the hiatus, the Rampage improved to .500 hockey with the help of hot goaltender Jacob Markstrom. With both Markstrom and Brian Foster in Florida, the Rampage signed Andrew Volkening to an amateur try-out (ATO). Volkening spent four years at the United States Air Force Academy, being their regular goaltender from 2007 to 2010. He won numerous awards in his college career, being named Atlantic Hockey Top Goaltender in 2008 and 2009. He went 69-39-14 with GAA of 2.19 and a . 915 Sv%.

The Rampage (or Florida Panthers) made a move on Friday, trading Angelo Esposito (who was acquired on July 8, 2011 for Kenndal McArdle) to the Texas (or Dallas) Stars for Ondrej Roman. Roman split his junior years between the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL and HC Vítkovice Steel of the Czech Extraliga (the highest-level ice hockey league in the Czech Republic). A fifth round pick (136th overall) in 2007, Roman played 72 games for Texas last season, scoring only 22 points (8G/14A) and playing in only two playoff games, while being a healthy scratch. This season he split time in both the ECHL (scoring six points in six games with the Idaho Steelheads) and AHL (five points in 24 games) before being traded.

2012 WJC Day 11: Sweden wins gold in OT, Canada takes bronze

Photo

Quinton Howden scored to two goals and help the Canadians win bronze over Finland in a 4-0 win. Jonathan Huberdeau scored zero points. And now that those guys are out of the way...

Sweden and Russia played a fantastic game, with both sides holding a 0-0 game that went into overtime, where this happened:

That's one of the greatest ways to win a tournament, if not the greatest! Mika Zibanejad scored the game's only goal with the helper from Patrik Nemeth. Congratulations to head coach Roger Ronnberg, and the rest of the Swedish Men's National Under 20 Ice Hockey Team. You all deserve it, and congratulations to Russia, as well. Looking forward to the 2013 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Ufa, Russia.

Panthers prospect Colby Robak selected for AHL All-Star Team roster

L-R: Robak, Michal Repik and Tyson Strachan during the 2011 NHL exhibition season

From the San Antonio Rampage:

Robak, 21, leads the Rampage with a plus-12 rating and is second on the team in points (19) and assists (14). The Dauphin, Manitoba native has five goals and 14 assists through 33 games this season. Robak earns his first AHL All-Star Classic selection in his second year in the AHL. He has appeared in 109 career AHL games with 12 goals and 31 assists with Rochester (2010-11) and San Antonio (2011-12). Robak was selected by the Florida Panthers in the second round (46th overall) in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Serious congrats to Colby on making the Classic in just his second pro campaign. Check out our quickie interview with him from almost two years ago - while still with the WHL Brandon Wheat Kings - here.
