Bill Torrey Tribute Night - October 23rd vs Islanders

From the official site: Bill Torrey Tribute Night will honor original Team President, current Alternate Governor and Hockey Hall of Fame member Mr. William A. Torrey with a special pre-game banner-raising ceremony, South Florida Hockey Den of Honor case dedication, in-game tribute, and more as the Cats take on his former team in the Islanders. How long overdue is this? Kudos to the club for - finally - setting it straight.

Commish Gary Bettman hosts Florida's Bill Torrey, discussing the Dale Tallon hiring, Randy Sexton's removal, tarps, and more. Follows Mike Richter at the 41:30 mark.

Panthers' Torrey to appear on tonight's "NHL Hour"

Longtime Cats alternate governor Bill Torrey will appear with Gary Bettman on this evening's "NHL Hour" (NHL.com and satellite providers), no doubt discussing which shades of blue look sharpest on industrial-grade tarps. Dale Tallon's name might pop up too. Show starts at 6 pm; the Bowtied One will follow Mike Richter, according to the presser. And keep in mind, it's a call-in show, so have at it: 877-645-6696.

Big stuff from Panthers' Torrey on GM search

The Sun-Sentinel's Steve Gorten scores big with over-the-top goodness from Florida's alternate governor Bill Torrey: As for where the search stands, Torrey said he expected there would be considerable interest in the job, but not as much as there has been. Torrey said he has received more than 60 inquiries through emails, phone calls, faxes and mail. Only one of those has no experience in hockey, Torrey said. Well, who wouldn't want to be involved with a club that the state hardly cares about (and I'm not providing a link 'cuz this is getting So. Old.). Good news all around. And the applicant with no hockey experience isn't me (I used U.S. Mail and claimed to be a native of Rangoon. Didn't pan out.).

Canada.com: long line for Panthers GM spot

From Jim Matheson: "If (Panthers search committee chair Bill) Torrey asks his contemporaries - Glen Sather, Cliff Fletcher, Lou Nanne - what guy they'd pitch his way, Risebrough, the former Minnesota GM, would probably get their nod." No, no, and no. First off, Torrey is aware of the era he's waddling in, which is nothing even remotely resembling the days when he put together the inaugural Cats, discounting any consideration of the aforementioned names (who were for the most part already well into their careers in management.) We're talking the early 1990s, kids. C'mon. This list of "contemporaries" is translated from a glyph in Mayan ruins. No one is seeking out these folks, nor their antiquated opinions on who might be a winner in this day and age. Wanna re-live the high-scoring eighties? Great...take your pick. But these guys and their heavenly choices aren't getting any team to the promised land.

Lost in the Martin shuffle? Not a chance: Rochester Americans circle the wagons

Look who suddenly became A LOT more important? Amerks' press release via Our Sports Central: Our Hockey Department is focused solely on this task and Jody Gage continues to lead the Amerks' efforts in this area. This will be an ongoing process up until July 1st and Jody will be active in this recruitment drive on an ongoing basis. We have been in contact with Bill Torrey and Randy Sexton of the Florida Panthers on the departure of Jacques Martin to Montreal. They have indicated to us that they are working to fill the Panthers general manager role as soon as possible and have assured us that any negotiations and commitments that have been made, on their behalf, regarding the Rochester Americans will continue to be a priority of the new GM and his management team. That Gage flip-flop from last week sure appears on much more solid footing. Someone has to run the show...

Panthers' Bill Torrey: For those who didn't know, Cats might just make it through this...

For informational purposes, From the Official Site's Dave Joseph: It wasn’t coincidence the Panthers early success – including being the NHL’s most successful first-year team (33 wins and 83 points in 1993-94) – came under Torrey’s tutelage. Torrey also helped develop a plan at the ’93 Expansion Draft that landed the Panthers players who would lead them to the 1996 Stanley Cup finals: John Vanbiesbrouck, Brian Skrudland, Tom Fitzgerald, Scott Mellanby, Dave Lowry, Mike Hough and Bill Lindsay. Oh yeah, then there's this nugget: In 1972, Torrey was named general manager of the expansion Islanders and he quickly built them into one of hockey’s greatest dynasties. The Islanders advanced to the semifinals in four of their first seven seasons and won four consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980-83. Torrey was also responsible for drafting Hall of Fame players Mike Bossy and Denis Potvin as well as Bill Smith.

NHL.com: More on Panthers Bill Torrey, Yormark approved Montreal's request "10 days ago"

From Dan Rosen: On Torrey becoming GM himself: "I think I have served my time as a general manager and I know where I am in this world and in this life," Torrey, the Panthers' alternate governor, said a conference call Monday. "My heart is with this franchise and I want to see a good choice come along." On when permission was granted to the Canadiens to speak with Martin: ...approximately 10 days ago Cohen granted permission for Montreal GM Bob Gainey to speak with Martin, who was hired Sunday and announced as the Habs’ new coach Monday. Yormark confirmed that the Panthers will not receive compensation for Martin from Montreal by saying, "The Canadiens asked for permission to speak with Jacques. We talked to Jacques, granted that permission and that was the terms of the deal."
