Vincent Lecavalier....clinched his 12th straight season of at least 20 goals. I don't think people appreciate how difficult it is to achieve that kind of consistency. Know who never had 12 straight 20 goal seasons? Mario Lemieux? Never had 12 straight, just 6. Mark Messier? Never had 12 straight, just 10. Steve Yzerman? Sorry boss, you never did it either. The best Stevie Y did was 8 straight seasons. And, remember, Vinny didn't play in the roaring 80's where the NHL looked like the QMJHL defensively.
Five months from today — on the 10th anniversary of his first NHL game out of retirement — the Penguins plan to dedicate a statue of franchise icon Mario Lemieux outside Consol Energy Center. From that point on Dec. 27 and through New Year's Day the focus of local sports fans will be on an outdoor hockey game to be played at a football stadium.
Not every NHL governor rejected Jim Balsillie as an owner in July. Three abstained – the Toronto Maple Leafs, Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins. It isn't clear why Toronto and Buffalo abstained, but Pittsburgh? Pens owner Mario Lemieux is no fan of Balsillie because of the BlackBerry tycoon's failed bid for the club in 2006, but court filings reveal Lemieux didn't want to "be on record as to anything that might look or be portrayed by others as anti-Canadian."
