Paraphrasing: "Dale Hunter, I think 21 games is one of those suspensions that was too much. I mean, he hit Turgeon after the whistle, but if I recall right, Pierre didn't even suffer a long-term injury on the play."

>>Scott Laughlin on XM NHL Home Ice today. Um, not quite. Today is the anniversary of Hunter's assault a full three seconds after Turgeon scored the goal (off a Hunter giveaway) that iced the series. Mike Brophy agreed with Laughlin. I'm not sure I get some people. Eighteen years later, it's still one of the most cowardly acts of petulant and dirty "play" I've ever seen.

Brophy sounds kind of high on the Islanders

5

Brophy (at Sportsnet) sounds a bit high on the team so far: "The funny thing about the Islanders is, with a little luck, they could be riding the same wave that has carried the upstart Colorado Avalanche to the very top of the standings." The Islanders have had some tough opponents. They've had some close games. But this sounds a bit like happy talk. They're an undermanned work in progress, plain and simple. One more quibble: There was nothing "ironic" about Tavares scoring the shootout winner. Nothing at all.

Sportnet's Mike Brophy Ranks Cam Ward NHL's No. 2 Goalie

7

It wasn't a surprise to see a Carolina Hurricanes player rank No. 12 on Sportsnet.ca's Mike Brophy's list of Top 50 NHL players. The surprise was that it wasn't Eric Staal. Brophy ranked Cam Ward No. 12, only behind Vancouver's Roberto Luongo (No. 4 overall) among goaltenders. The list was was headed by Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin at 1-2-3. On Ward: The Carolina netminder was the NHL's best goalie in the second half of last season and will now be charged with trying to put a halt to his team's history of good year/bad year/good year/bad year ... Staal also checked in near the top, ranking 15th on the list. Brophy said: The oldest of the four Staal brothers popped a career-best 40 goals last season and looks primed to take his place among the best scoring forwards in the game. OK, so he forgot about Staal's 45-goal 2005-06 campaign, but you can't deny that Brophy — a long-time contributor to The Hockey News — knows the game.

Phil Kessel is denying reports that he and his agent have refused to negotiate with the Bruins, but admitted that the chances of staying in Boston are slim.

Bouw-Mania! Sportsnet's Brophy: To trade or not to trade

"The dilemma Panthers GM Jacques Martin faces is that his team sits in seventh place in the Eastern Conference and has not made the playoffs in seven seasons. So you can understand Martin's desperation."

Eating Crow

Mike Brophy, taking a time time off from being terrible on Sportsnet, continues hammering at the meme that the Leafs are doing everything wrong by hiring Ron Wilson by writing a brutal article. What if the Leafs already know Burke is coming and that he'd be open to working with Wilson? Are they still incompetent? I especially enjoy the suggestion that the Leafs should have just left things as they were for another year to try to get Tavares. Wow.
