Even when he's been stuck in his zone, there's no panic on his face, he's in control of things. He's a rookie, yes, but he holds himself well. He fits in well. He sure isn't out of place. He just has to realize that in the NHL it's easy to make it sometimes, but it's real tough to stay.
The team played well for 60 minutes. It was very crisp what we were doing out there, making tape-to-tape passes. [Forward Jonathan] Huberdeau gained a lot of confidence [with] Hockey Canada trying out this summer...he's making a huge difference out there.
I came here with the idea to be prepared to make the team.
He's a pretty special player. He makes the players around him much better. But once he walks out the door, he's a part of the Florida Panthers as far as I'm concerned. The longer he stays there, the better for him. If he can make that hockey club, I'll be the happiest guy in the world for him. We're not going to base everything on one individual. If he comes back I'm sure we'll find a way to get him back in the lineup (laughs).
Most guys when you ask them what their goals are, they say they want to play in the NHL, but Jacob's response was, "I want to be the best goalie in the world." It was refreshing. You usually don't get a lot of guys aspiring to do that at such a young age.
"He has no ego."
I think the biggest thing I’m going to take away from [Florida's development camp] is what they are stressing with the program, and that is about using your head and your body. What that means is just making sure you are both physically and mentally [ready] for whatever is thrown at you, and making sure that you prepare for every game the same way and being able to perform at your very best.
"I'm extremely disappointed with how it ended (in Florida). But sometimes it happens that way. On the other hand, I'm happy to come back to Kingston and use it as another year of development."
I wanted to fight him. I instigated it. It's a hockey fight. The fact that I was tied up (by linesmen) didn't help. (Montreal's Travis Moen) saw it and he threw the punch which wasn't really good. I could've done it to him at the end. … I could've broken his nose, but I didn't do it.
There's talk about Jacob Markstrom and there should be. He's a great goalie. But I train all summer to play hockey in the winter.
