Florida's Campbell is second overall among NHL defensemen in scoring
Florida's Campbell is second overall among NHL defensemen in scoring

To the chagrin of Senators fans worldwide, the NHL will plug the remaining All-Star Game roster holes today. Much as we in South Florida would surely welcome an even greater Ottawa presence featuring, oh, say offensive firebrands Chris Phillips and Matt Carkner on D, chances are better than lousy that the Panthers' Brian Campbell (33 points) will likely make the cut. Beyond that iron-clad guarantee nothing is in stone, i.e. Kris Versteeg and Jason Garrison are, fair or not, putting from the fringe in a crowded field. But it's only a fantasy game, right?

Why last night rocked:

It didn't.

Why last night jonesed:

  • WSH over PIT, 1-0 (REG); not only do the Caps pick up a deuce on FLA, but the vanquished - losers of six straight & outscored 19-6 over that stretch - get the opportunity to right their ship tomorrow. In Sunrise.
  • NJ over EDM, 2-1 (OT); 1st star: Taylor Hall (1A), 2nd star: Ilya Kovalchuk (1G/1A), 3rd star: Zach Parise (1G). What am I missing here?

Playoff Update:

FLA did not play, playoff odds down 0.9 to 82.4% via Sports Club Stats

Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla:

  • MTL at BOS, 7 p.m.
  • PHI at NYI, 7
  • OTW at NYR, 7
  • CAR at TB, 7:30
  • SJ at WPG, 8:30

Next up for the Cats:

You know the drill all too well by now...tomorrow at home vs PIT; the LBC Game Thread eats one lousy foot and gets called a cannibal at 7.

Did you know:

Crosby may get the props but Malkin cannot be underestimated heading into Friday's match, as his 18 points (4G) in 19 games against Florida attest.

On the table:

Sir Sid is on the trip...CoverGate into a fifth day...former Cat Steve MacIntyre is available for light household chores and fights...Gudbranson The Younger suspended a whopping 10 games for a check to the head (not his own)...ever heard of Coral Springs' Trent Ruffolo? Yale has...Burnside's Five Things...how about a game on - wait for it - an aircraft carrier?...the league's most "overrated" players, courtesy of the players...the rarity of the Gordie Howe Hat Trick...THN's top trade candidates heading into the deadline..."losing mentality" settling into Habs' dressing room?...Fraser on penalty shots...CapGeek has revamped its trade deadline cap tracker to include a bevy of new elements...great kid, bad injury, on the mend...Dobber released his Top 215 Fantasy Prospects list; guess who emerged at #1?...Our 2012 Census Poll remains open, so if you haven't yet contributed, please do.
