But will he play? Ex-Bruin Sturm has proven a worthy opponent vs his longtime former employer

February 21, 2009: The date of the Florida Panthers' last victory over Boston from Sunrise. In the span of five games since, four matches were decided by 1 goal and three in shootouts. Regulation goal differential: Bruins 11, Panthers 8. Most of those on the current Cats roster have somewhat less-than-sparkling lifetime stats against the B's, though in-the-lineup-out-of-the-lineup Marco Sturm (there's that name again) has been terrific, with 7G (2 GW) and 3A in 12 career games against his former club.

Why last night rocked:

  • On NHL ice? Yeah, sure; not a banner evening for Florida's recent efforts, as everyone of significance gained at least a point (below)

Why last night jonesed:

  • WPG over DAL, 5-2: another home game, another victory for Jets as Ladd pots 2, Pavelec stops 27. Host Caps Friday.
  • COL over BUF, 5-4 (SO): checked on the Sabres in Eastern standings lately?
  • MTL over OTT, 3-2 (SO): points in four straight for Sens

Panthers Playoff Update:

Why tonight is a Big Deal in SoFla, beyond the obvious:

Focusing on clubs within 5 points of Panthers (79P); teams FLA needs to lose in bold…

  • Not a single game, so enjoy the action from Sunrise without that instinctive need to scramble for out-of-town scores every 90 seconds

Next up for the Cats:

  • Hosting the Broons this evening; the LBC Game Thread will begin showing uncorrelated targets approaching from the north-northwest at 7. Colonial insight on tonight's event can be found at the cobblestone doorstep of Stanley Cup Of Chowder. Need tickets? Seats starting at $8 via TiqIQ

Did you know:

  • Boston has failed to score more than 3 goals in six of their past seven games, going 2-5. Their power play has been similarly atrocious, with a single goal in last nine (1-for-25).

Wednesday’s Organizational News:

  • Kris Versteeg, Dmitry Kulikov, and Scottie Upshall again practiced in full gear; D Tyson Strachan likely headed back to San Antonio soon
