Florida Panthers prospect Yaroslav Kosov off to solid KHL start
124th overall pick in 2011 draft has suddenly found his scoring touch.
While we bask in the glory of Tuesday's rookie tournament win and enjoy the start of Florida Panthers training camp proper, the KHL has already kicked off its regular season. 2011 5th-rounder Yaroslav Kosov is off and running in the city of Magnitogorsk with 3 goals, 3 assists and +4 rating for 6-1-0-1 Metallurg.
The solid start has Kosov on course for a career-best KHL campaign. Coming into this season, the 21-year-old winger had posted totals of just 10 goals and 10 assists in 99 games. His best season from an offensive standpoint was back in 2011-12, when he scored 4 goals and 5 assists in 27 games. After three seasons of slight offensive decline, those numbers will be surpassed soon.
At 6'3", 220 lbs, Kosov has NHL size, but up until now, hasn't shown much of an inclination to be a scorer. Already an above average stock-handler and passer, if he can keep putting up the points, he may on his way to becoming the type of power forward the Panthers envisioned when they called his name in St. Paul. Keep on eye on him as he plays through his fifth KHL season, it might just be his last.
