Czech Republic 4, USA 3

A second period charging major to Justin Abdelkader cost the United States dearly in its quarterfinal loss to the Czech Republic today. The opportunistic Czechs got goals from Tomas Hertl and Roman Cervenka on the ensuing power play, while Abdelkader got tossed from the game. Ondrej Nemec scored another power-play marker later in the frame to give the Czechs a cushy 4-1 lead. Tyler Johnson scored twice within a thirteen-second span with goalie Tim Thomas on the bench late in the third period as Team USA fell just short of a miraculous comeback. Former Panthers forward Peter Mueller assisted on all three American goals. As for the current Cats playing on Team USA: Drew Shore logged 8:38 TOI, went 4/8 on draws, finished with a -1 rating, and had no shots on goal. Jimmy Hayes took three shots on goal and finished with a -1 rating in 9:03 TOI. Vincent Trocheck went 7/9 on face-offs, had one shot on goal, and finished with an even rating in 13:32 TOI. Finland scored twice in the third period to erase a 2-1 deficit and surprisingly knocked Canada from the tournament. 2011 Panther 7th round draft pick Iiro Pakarinen, who was never signed, scored the game-winner with 3:08 remaining in regulation. Jonathan Huberdeau only logged 10:09 TOI and finished the game with no shots on goal and an even rating, ending his five-game scoring streak. Defenseman Erik Gudbranson played well, logging 9:53 TOI, three shots on goal, and finished with a +1 rating. Pekka Rinne stopped 36 shots to led the Finns to the upset.
