The Florida Panthers have parted ways with 2010 fifth-round draft pick Zach Hyman, sending him (and a conditional 2017 seventh-round pick) to the Toronto Maple Leafs for AHLer Greg McKegg. The University of Michigan prospect, who was looking for an immediate roster spot, had earlier stated his desire to sign elsewhere, so the Cats got something back before he became an unrestricted free agent.
Coming back to Sunrise is Toronto Marlie McKegg, who played junior hockey in the OHL for Erie and London . The 6'0", 191 lb. center was a third-round choice of the parent Maple Leafs in 2010.
Last season, McKegg scored a career-high 22 goals and added 15 assists in 62 regular season games. In the playoffs, the 23-year-old pivot fired home 5 goals in 9 games. McKegg's best AHL season points-wise was in 2013-14 when he scored 47 on 19 goals and 28 assists.
McKegg has played a total of 4 NHL games, including one against the Panthers last season, but is still looking for his first point in the bigs.
Look for McKegg to part an important role on the Portland Pirates next season and perhaps see some call up duty with the Cats.
