New, comments

I am altering the deal, pray I don’t alter it any further.

In order to get as many of the league’s thirty-one GMs on board for an early June draft, the NHL is going all Darth Vader by raising the possibility of it proposing solutions, including the ability to rework trades that involve conditional 2020 picks, to every one of these conditional trades while also allowing the teams up to a week to go back and come up with a different solution on their own.

Many of these trades would seem to have a simple solution. Let’s take a look at the deals involving the Florida Panthers Atlantic Division rivals since the Cats dodn’t have to directly worry about this.

Conditions: This draft pick is top-3 lottery-protected. Should the Islanders’ 2020 first become a top-3 pick, the Senators will get the Islanders’ 2021 first-round pick.

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs send forward Patrick Marleau, a conditional first-round pick in 2020 or 2021 and their 2020 seventh-round pick to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Carolina’s 2020 sixth-round pick.

Conditions: Should the Maple Leafs 2020 first-rounder fall within picks 1 to 10, they will transfer their own 2021 first-round pick.

Related Trade: The Hurricanes trade the later of either its 2020 first-round pick or Toronto’s 2020 first-round pick (previously conditionally acquired by Carolina) to the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Brady Skjei.

Conditions: In the event Carolina does not own Toronto’s 2020 first, then the Rangers will acquire Carolina’s 2020 first.

  • Vancouver Canucks trade goalie Marek Mazanec, Vancouver’s 2019 third-round pick (71st overall) and Vancouver’s 2020 first-round pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for forward JT Miller.

Conditions: If the Canucks miss the 2020 playoffs, the pick converts to Vancouver’s 2021 first-round selection.

Related Trade: The New Jersey Devils trade forward Blake Coleman to Tampa Bay in exchange for prospect Nolan Foote and Vancouver’s first-round pick in the 2020 or 2021 NHL Draft (previously acquired by Tampa Bay).

Conditions: The Devils will receive the Canucks first-rounder in 2020 or 2021 per the following conditions of the Tampa Bay-Vancouver trade on June 22, 2019 - If Vancouver makes the 2020 playoffs, it transfers its 2020 first-round pick to Tampa Bay. If not, the pick converts to Vancouver’s 2021 first-round selection.

Conditions: The Oilers will transfer its 2020 fourth-rounder, unless they advance to the third round of the 2020 playoffs and Green plays in 50 per cent or more of Edmonton’s cumulative games during the first two rounds. If that happens, Detroit gets Edmonton’s 2020 third-round pick.

Should the NHL hold the 2020 Entry Draft in June?
