A quiet weekend passed as we moved a little deeper into the month of August and a little closer to the return of Florida Panthers hockey. The last bit of offseason work for Bill Zito, signing the recently acquired Samson Reinhart to a new contract, still remains on the general manager’s to-do list. According to WPLG’s David Dwork, there is no reason to stress.

A contract extension for captain Aleksander Barkov also remains on the horizon. Barkov is currently in Finland, so maybe the pending monster deal will be announced upon his return to South Florida.

There were a few more new contracts handed out this weekend.

The Edmonton Oilers locked up the number three goaltender on the team’s depth chart by signing Stuart Skinner to a two-year, two-way deal. Skinner put together a strong 2020-21 campaign with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, finishing the season with a 20-9-1 record, 2.38 GAA, .914 save percentage and two shutouts. (The Copper & Blue)

Edmonton also signed unrestricted free agent forward Brendan Perlini to a one-year, two-way contract worth $750K at the NHL level. Perlini, 25, spent the 2020-21 season with HC Ambrì-Piotta of the Swiss National League, where he put up 9 goals and 16 points in 21 games. (The Copper & Blue)

The Minnesota Wild retained the services of forward Will Bitten, signing the 23-year-old forward to a new one-year, two-way contract. Bitten, originally drafted by the Montreal Canadiens, spent a third straight season with the Iowa Wild of the AHL and produced 7 goals and 19 points in 31 games. (Iowa Wild)
