Marie-Philip Poulin scored 7:22 into 3-on-3 overtime as Canada defeated the five-time defending champion United States 3-2 in Calgary to win the Gold Medal at the 2021 IIHF Women’s World Championship.

Alex Carpenter scored twice in the first period to stake the Americans to a two-goal lead, but goals 2:29 apart from Brianne Jenner and Jamie Lee Rattray early in the second period knotted the score. Jenner set up Canada’s other two goals to finish the tilt with three points.
Ann-Renée Desbiens stopped 23 of 25 shots to get the win while U.S. goaler Nicole Hensley made 29 saves for the silver medalists.
Finland claimed its 13th bronze medal at the Worlds by beat Switzerland 3-1. Tanja Niskanen, Ella Vitasuo and Petra Nieminen scored the goals and Anni Keisala stopped 22 shots. Lara Stalder notched the only goal for the fourth-place Swiss team.
Russia took fifth place in the tournament with a 2-0 win over Japan. Valeria Pavlova and Viktoria Kulishova lit the lamp and goaltender Valeria Merkusheva posted a 21-save shutout. The Russians will remain in Group A in the next world championship.

The Chicago Blackhawks inked defenseman Connor Murphy to a four-year contract extension worth $17.6 million. Murphy’s new deal will kick in at the start of the 2022-23 season. His average ice time last season was 22:09, second only to Duncan Keith among Blackhawks defensemen. He produced 3 goals and 15 points in 50 games. (Second City Hockey)
The St. Louis Blues signed forward Tanner Dickinson to an entry-level contract. Dickinson was taken in the second round (119th overall) of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. The 19-year-old appeared in three games with the AHL’s Utica Comets last season. (St. Louis Game Time)
