Checkers sweep Wolf Pack over the weekend

While we’ve had our attention on the 4 Nations Face-Off, the AHL schedule has been ongoing.

Over the weekend, the Charlotte Checkers swept the Hartford Wolf Pack at Bojangles Coliseum.

On Saturday, goaltender Ken Appleby made 18 saves to backstop the Checkers to a 4-0 victory over the Wolf Pack. It was Appleby’s league-leading fifth shutout of the season. Justin Sourdif scored twice and Wilmer Skoog and Rasmus Asplund also lit the lamp for Charlotte. Newcomer Jesse Puljujärvi, Trevor Carrick, Will Lockwood, Michael Benning, C.J. Smith and Jaycob Megna collected assists.

Kyle Criscuolo scored 2:29 into overtime to give the Checkers a 4-3 win on Sunday. Benning scored two goals and John Leonard notched his 20th of the season with 30 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to an extra period. Assists went to Asplund, Puljujärvi, Sourdif, Carrick and Smith. Rookie keeper Cooper Black stopped 15 of 18 shots faced to raise his record to 7-2-1.

Charlotte (27-14-3-2) will host the Atlantic Division-leading Hershey Bears this coming weekend.
