Kulikov (pictured above in action from last season) logged a team-leading 26:23 minutes of ice time, had no shots on goal and finished with a -1 rating during the tough road affair played in Magnitogorsk. Justin Hodgeman scored his fifth goal of the season at the 3:21 mark of the first period to give Metallurg the early lead with Sergei Mozyakin collecting the only assist. In the second period, Metallurg’s Denis Platonov beat Semyon Varlamov to delight the home crowd of 6,812 fans, extending the lead to two. Lokomotiv would finally solve Metallurg goalkeeper Ari Ahonen at 1:59 of the third period on Yegor Averin’s even strength goal. Averin would strike again, converting a feed from Alexander Chernikov with just 2:26 remaining in regulation time to complete the comeback. After neither team could score in overtime the game went to the shootout. After an opening miss from Emil Galimov and former Florida Panthers Niklas Hagman and Viktor Kolzov were denied by Ahonen, Danill Apalkov netted Lokomotiv’s fourth round attempt to give Yaroslavl the road win. Semyon Varlamov made 40 saves to pick up the win and also turned aside all four Metallurg shootout attempts while the two goals were the fifth and sixth of the season for Yegor Averin. Lokomotiv Yaroslavl remained on top of the Tarasov Division and in second place in the KHL’s Western Conference behind Dynamo Moscow.
