Panthers at The Worlds: More from Matheson

Florida Panthers defenseman Mike Matheson assisted on Taylor Hall‘s game-winning goal early in the third period as Canada went on to beat Germany 5-2 in Thursday action at the IIHF World Championship in Russia.

The helper gave Matheson (2G/3A) five points in the tournament. He finished the game with one shot on goal and a +1 rating in 15:17 TOI.

The 22-year-old Matheson is tied with Hall and fellow teammate Derick Brassard with a tournament-best +9 rating. His five points are tied for second-best among all defensemen behind Switzerland’s Raphael Diaz, who has six.

Canada is now 4-0 in opening-round play and tied with Finland atop Group B.

The Canadians will take to the ice again on Saturday versus Slovakia, while Aleksander Barkov, Jussi Jokinen and the rest of the Finns will take on France.

In other action not involving Panther players, The U.S. whitewashed France 4-0, the Czechs blanked Norway 7-0, and host Russia hammered Denmark by a 10-1 count.

Today’s games are the Czech Republic versus Kazakhstan, Denmark versus Latvia, USA versus Hungary, and Germany versus Belarus.
