The National Hockey League announced that Florida Panthers center Aleksander Barkov has been named one of three finalists for the 2019-19 Lady Byng Memorial Trophy awarded to “the player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability”.
The 23-year-old Barkov led the Panthers with a franchise record 96 points (35G/61A) and finished 10th in NHL scoring, Barkov set career-highs in games played, goals, assists, points, power-play goals (13), power-play points (31), faceoff win percentage (53.69), shooting percentage (17.0) and takeaways (100). The 6-foot-3, 213-pound native of Tampere, Finland is only the fourth Finnish-born NHL player to reach the 90-point mark in a single season, joining Jari Kurri, Teemu Selanne and Olli Jokinen.
Logging the second-most total ice time among NHL forwards (1,833:01) and averaging the fourth-most ice time per game (22:21), Barkov posted a mere 8 PIM and drew a total of 34 minor penalties against. His 8 PIM tied the second-fewest in a season of his NHL career (8, 2015-16).
Florida’s second overall pick in 2013 has been named a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for the second consecutive season and for the third time in his young career. Defenseman Brian Campbell is the only Panther to have won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (2011-12).
Calgary’s Sean Monahan and St. Louis’ Ryan O’Reilly join Barkov as the finalists for this season’s Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. The winner is selected by a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA) at the conclusion of the regular season and will be announced during the 2019 NHL Awards™ presented by Bridgestone at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas on Wednesday, June 19.
