Leon Draisaitl’s second goal of the game with 31 seconds left in overtime, and Tomas Nosek in the sin bin, lifted the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-3 overtime win over the Florida Panthers in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final. After Draisaitl opened the scoring 1:06 into the action, the Panthers forged ahead on goals from Sam Bennett and Brad Marchand that came 1:41 apart. Marchand’s power-play marker came after the Oilers unsuccessfully challenged Bennett’s. Playoff Sam lit the lamp again early in the second, but Edmonton’s Viktor Arvidsson quickly countered for the home side. The Cats were at their best in the middle frame, but failing to tack on another goal eventually cost them. Mattias Ekholm, playing in just his second game of the postseason, tied the tilt 6:33 into by finishing off a pass from Connor McDavid, who also set up Draisaitl’s game-winner. Carter Verhaeghe and Nate Scmidt each contributed two assists and Sergei Bobrovsky made 42 saves for the Panthers, who despite getting outplayed, just needed to manufacture one more goal over the final 57 minutes.
