Gameday 45: Florida Panthers at New Jersey Devils

Graphic design: Francisco Oporta

The Florida Panthers (25-16-3) will do battle with the New Jersey Devils (26-15-4) tonight in the second of game of a road back-to-back that will close the season series between the two Stanley Cup contenders.

A third period meltdown cost the Panthers two points as the Philadelphia Flyers scored thrice to pull out a 4-3 victory over the Cats at Wells Fargo Center last night. Sam Reinhart provided two-thirds of Florida’s offense by notching his league-leading fifth shorthanded goal in the first and then scoring a third period power-play marker. The Panthers had been 16-0-0 this season when leading before gagging up the lead to more determined Flyers.

The Devils seem to be getting back on track after winning two of their last three tilts following a four-game losing streak. New Jersey, who goes for season-series sweep tonight, did Florida a favor by beating the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night, thanks to Stefan Noesen’s goal with 1:41 remaining in overtime. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom sports a miserly 2.19 GAA and Jack Hughes leads the Devils in scoring with 52 points.
