The Florida Panthers (37-37-4) will try to end a three-game losing streak and complete the season-series sweep when they pay a final visit to the Ottawa Senators (41-27-10) tonight at Canadian Tire Centre in suburban Kanata.
Depleted Florida gave a spirited effort in Montreal on Tuesday, but couldn’t close, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Canadiens in a hard-fought game that went to a shootout. Carter Verhaeghe, Cole Reinhardt and Eetu Luostarinen scored even-strength goals for the Panthers, who held three different leads before Lane Hutson’s spectacular effort to set up Nick Suzuki’s goal with 21 seconds left in regulation extended the tilt. Daniil Tarasov made 29 stops to help the Cats remain at NHL .500. Florida has recalled defensemen Marek Alscher and Ludvig Jansson from Charlotte.
After getting beaten 4-1 by the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, the Senators posted impressive wins over the Eastern Conference’s two division leaders. On Sunday, Ottawa doubled up the Carolina Hurricanes 6-3 and Tuesday saw them dominate the Tampa Bay Lightning by a 6-2 count. The Senators currently hold the second wild card spot and control their own playoff destiny. Tim Stützle leads the team with 34 goals, 48 assists and 82 points.
