Backlund leads Flames to 5-2 win over Panthers

Mikael Backlund scored two goals and set up another in the second period to lead the Calgary Flames to a 5-2 win over the Florida Panthers, who were opening a four-game road trip.

Kris Versteeg, Mark Giordano (PPG) and Sean Monahan (ENG) scored the other Calgary goals. Giordano added two assists.

Vincent Trocheck opened the scoring at 3:46 of the first period and then beat Chad Johnson again on the glove side 4:39 to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead after twenty minutes.

Jared McCann drew the primary assist on both of Trocheck’s goals. Aaron Ekblad picked up the secondary helper on the first and Jason Demers on the second.

The Flames went 2-for-4 on the power play, with the goals from Goirdano and Backlund coming 6:58 apart in the second period.

Johnson made 20 stops to get the win while Roberto Luongo finished with 24 saves in what wasn’t one of his sharpest outings.

Florida gets right back at it tonight, making their first ever visit to Rogers Place to face Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers.
