The Florida Panthers dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to the Carolina Hurricanes at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, NC last night.
Brady Tkachuk opened the scoring at 4:31 of the first period by smacking a feed from Sam Reinhart by Brandon Bussi from the left circle. Aleksander Barkov drew the secondary assist on Tkachuk’s third of the preseason.
Bradly Nadeau quickly countered for the Hurricanes, flipping the rebound of former Panther Mike Reilly’s soft shot from the left point past Jacob Markstrom to tie the tilt.
Barkov would restore Florida’s lead eighteen seconds later when he took a pass from Brady Tkachuk and beat Bussi with a no-look, low wrister for his second goal in as many games. The second assist on the goal went to Seth Jones.
Unfortunately, that would be it offensively for the Cats for the rest of the night and Carolina would even it up again when Justin Robidas solved Akira Schmid with an over the shoulder shot at the 11:25 mark of the middle frame.
The Panthers out-shot the Hurricanes 5-1 in overtime, but Cayden Primeau, who stopped all 20 shots faced, would not yield and then Nadeau and Felix Unger Sörum would each go backhand on Schmid in the shootout to give the home team the win.
After upping his preseason point total to five, Brady Tkachuk took the third period off for precautionary reasons. Barkov is up to four points (2G/2A) after also finishing with a goal and an assist. Markstrom and Schmid each faced thirteen shots and stopped 12 of them.
Florida’s next bit of exhibition hockey will come on Thursday night in Tampa, where they will ice an AHL-heavy roster against the pugnacious LIghtning.
