The Charlotte Checkers pounded the Springfield Thunderbirds by a 8-1 count in Game 1 of their best-of-three series at Bojangles Coliseum last night. Noah Gregor, who played in 37 games with the Florida Panthers this season, scored twice in the first period and Jack Studnicka put up two goals and two assists to power the Checkers offense. In addition to stopping 18 of 19 shots faced, goaltender Cooper Black had the lone assist on Marek Alscher’s game-opening goal 5:05 into the contest. Sandis Vilmanis, Nolan Foote and Tobias Björnfot also turned on the red light for the Checkers. Mike Benning and Ben Steeves each collected two assists and Jack Devine, Robert Mastrosimone, Colton Huard, Nate Smith, Gracyn Sawchyn, Brian Pinho and Foote were cedited with one assist apiece. Game 2 is Friday night in Charlotte.

STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS (Tuesday)

Noah Cates and Trevor Zegras each collected a goal and an assist for the Philadelphia Flyers, who took a commanidng 3-0 series lead against the Pittsburgh Penguins with a 5-2 victory in Game 3 at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Wednesday. Former Panther Owen Tippett completed the scoring with an empty-netter.

Wyatt Johnston notched a power-play marker 12:10 into the second overtime to lift the Dallas Stars a 4-3 win against the Minnesota Wild in Game 3 at Grand Casino Arena on Wednesday. Johnston also drew an assist on Matt Duchene’s power-play goal that tied the game in the third period.

The Anaheim Ducks gagged up a two-goal, second-period lead, but still managed to post a 6-4 win over the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place to even the series at a game apiece. Cutter Gauthier scored his first two posteason goals, including the go-ahead goal late in the final frame to help get the Ducks over the finish line.
