Stars drop Panthers 2-1 in shootout

The Florida Panthers continued to fire blanks in the preseason as the Dallas Stars posted a second-straight 2-1 decision over the Cats, this time winning in a shootout after taking Sunday’s game in overtime.

After goaltenders James Reimer and Antti Niemi kept the game scoreless through the first forty minutes, the Panthers opened the scoring early in the final frame.

Paul Thompson bagged his second of the preseason with assists going to Greg McKegg and Mark Pysyk at the 2:29 mark.

Later in the period, an interference call on Jakub Kindl put the Stars on a power play and Patrick Eaves tied the game with 5:08 left in regulation.

Jamie Benn and Jordie Benn drew the assists on the Eaves marker.

Eventually, the game went to the shootout where Denis Gurianov notched the winner, and only conversion, to open the fifth round.

Niemi, who finished with 27 saves, denied Dryden Hunt to give the Stars the win.

Reimer went the distance for the Panthers and delivered another strong performance, stopping 34 of the 35 shots he faced.

In addition to his helper, McKegg led the Cats with five shots on goal. Aaron Ekblad, Jussi Jokinen and Reilly Smith each registered four shots.

The Panthers (1-2-2) are scheduled to play the Tampa Bay Lightning Thursday night at the BB&T Center, weather permitting.
