Florida Panthers dip into free agent pool, sign F Christopher Higgins
Free agent winger Christopher Higgins has signed a one-season, $1.6M deal with the Panthers. The Smithtown, New York native is a former first-round pick (14th overall) in 2002 by the Canadiens.
Official release here.
Florida will be Higgins' fourth club in just over a year, having traveled from Montreal to Calgary to the Rangers in that short span. A former 50-point scorer (27 goals), the forward has seen his numbers trend remarkably down in recent years. This is one signing that comes with the "project" moniker, given his tough last few seasons - and the numerous moves probably didn't lend a positive aftertaste. He unquestionably has the ability - and history - to secure a second-line spot on the roster. He's got a sketchy injury record: in and out of lineups eight times (and missed the final month of the 2009-10 season due to a foot ailment). It's only a one year deal in any case.
