Florida Panthers fire assistant GM Mike Santos

Tallon: "We need to go in a different direction"; Horachek next?

The Panthers parted ways with assistant general manager Mike Santos on Tuesday, a decision which will be felt all the way to San Antonio, as Santos held the role of general manager for the AHL Rampage as well.

The Miami Herald and Sun-Sentinel have this one pretty well covered, and to say a move this close to the top of the pyramid is a shocker may be stretching things a bit. Santos had an affinity for mining his old stomping ground in Nashville of castoffs and reclamation projects, and that well has run dry. Interesting tidbit via Harvey as the news was beginning to flow:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Santos didn&#39;t agree with the Panthers bringing up young players from AHL. Felt that G Jacob Markstrom was mishandled. <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=%23FlaPanthers&amp;src=hash">#FlaPanthers</a></p>&mdash; Harvey Fialkov (@hfialkov) <a href="https://twitter.com/hfialkov/statuses/448603118469926912">March 25, 2014</a></blockquote>

So there's that.

Anyway, Dale Tallon assured that interim coach (and Santos recruit) Peter Horachek's future with the club will not hinge at all on Tuesday's decision.

Yeah, not really buying that one, but he's got to say it for the sake of professionalism. So the search begins for a replacement, preferably with a splitting of duties between the NHL and AHL levels.

Now that the Nashville Glow is burning out, will interim coach Peter Horachek be with the Cats after April 12?

Yes...he'll be given every opportunity to win as a new roster comes together28
No...there's a reason "interim" remains in his title, and likely the plan from the start158
