Friday Offseason Caterwaul: Florida Panthers Open Forum

Jamie Lee Rattray scored twice in Canada’s dominating 5-1 win over the United States at  the 2021 Women’s World Hockey Championship in Calgary, Alberta. Melodie Daoust had a goal and an assist and Sarah Nurse (SHG) and Renata Fast also scored. Lee Stecklein ended Ann-Renee Desbiens shutout bid 2:44 into the third period.

Canada finished atop Group A with a 4-0 record and +15 goal differential. They will play Japan in the quarterfinals on Saturday. The U.S. finished in second place in Group A with a 3-1 record. They will play Japan in the quarterfinals.

Japan earned second place in place in Group B with a 2-1 victory over Germany. Finland. already locked into third place in Group A, blasted Switzerland 6-0. The Swiss team finished the preliminary round with an 0-5 record. They will face fourth place Russia in the quarterfinals.

Group D

Filip Komorski scored with 5:01 remaining in regulation and John Murray made 46 saves to lead Poland to a 1-0 upset win over Belarus.

Libor Hudacek and Martin Gernat scored the goals in host Slovakia’s 2-1 win over Austria. Brian Lebler was the only Austrian to beat goaltender Branislav Konrad.

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Alexandre Texier scored twice to help France upend Hungary by a 5-3 count. Goaltender Florian Hardy finished with 33 saves.

Former Florida Panthers prospect Rodrigo Abols lit the lamp in host Latvia’s 6-0 rout of Italy. Ivars Punnenovs posted a 16-save shutout.

Winnipeg Jets forward Nikaloj Ehlers struck twice in Denmark’s 4-3 win over Slovenia. Columbus’ Oliver Bjorkstrand set up two goals for the Danes. Los Angeles Kings center Anze Kopitar had an assist for Slovenia.

Stefan Espeland and Ken Andre Olimb each had a goal and an assist in Norway’s 4-1 victory over South Korea. Henrik Haukeland stopped 8 of 9 shots for the host country.

NHL signings

The Carolina Hurricanes signed restricted free agent forward Andrei Svechnikov to an eight-year deal worth $62 million. Mister Svechnikov put up 42 points in 55 games during the final year of his entry-level contract. (Canes Country)

The Philadelphia Flyers signed center Sean Couturier to an eight-year contract extension worth $62 million. Couturier produced 41 points in 45 games last season. His new deal will kick in at the start of the 2022-23 campaign. (Broad Street Hockey)

The Calgary Flames signed restricted free agent forward Dillon Dube to a three-year contract worth $6.9 million. Dube, 23, posted career-highs with 11 goals and 11 assists in 2020-21. (Sportsnet)
