Florida Panthers at the Worlds: A recap of day one action

The 2015 IIHF World Championship kicked off yesterday with four games, all involving members of the Florida Panthers.

Canada 6, Latvia 1: Jason Spezza scored two goals and added an assist to power Canada’s 6-1 rout of Latvia. Nathan MacKinnon also contributed 3 points and Sidney Crosby scored on a penalty shot to complete the scoring. Aaron Ekblad logged 11:31 TOI and finished with one shot on goal and an even rating. USA 5, Finland 1: Captain Matt Hendricks scored twice and added an assist to lead the Americans to a minor upset over the Finns, who finished second in last year’s tournament. Aleksander Barkov finished with no points or shots on goal and a -2 rating in 19:49 TOI. Jussi Jokinen registered no points, 2 shots and also went -2 in 18:56 TOI. For more click here

Sweden 6, Czech Republic 5 (SO): Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored the winning goal as the Swedes edged the Czechs 6-5. Jaromir Jagr scored a first period power-play goal to get the Czechs, who were trailing 2-0 at the time, on the board. Jagr finished with 3 shots on goal and an even rating in 16:42 TOI. Russia 6, Norway 2: KHLer Danis Zaripov scored two goals and added an assists in Russia’ easy 6-2 win over Norway. Dmitry Kulikov finished with one shot on goal and an even rating in 17:34 TOI. Kulikov took a holding minor in the second period. Norway did not score on the ensuing power play. For more click here

There are six games on tap today, including two involving Panthers. Tomas Kopecky and Slovakia will take on Denmark while Jagr and the Czechs will face-off against Latvia.
