Panthers at The Worlds: Matheson, Canada crush Sweden

Florida Panthers defenseman Mike Matheson drew an assist on Max Domi’s second period goal as Canada advanced to the semifinals with a surprisingly easy 6-0 win over Sweden at the IIHF World Championship in Russia on Thursday.

Matheson finished the game with one shot on goal and a +3 rating in 14:19 of ice time. The 22-year-old has six points (2G/4A) in 8 games to go along with a tournament-best +12 rating. He is one of three defensemen with six points. The other two are Russia’s Anton Belov and Switzerland’s Raphael Diaz.

Mark Stone, Mark Scheifele, Matt Dumba, Brad Marchand and Derick Brassard scored the other goals for Canada.

The Canadians will face the United States on Saturday, while Jussi Jokinen, hopefully, Aleksander Barkov, and Finland will take on host Russia.

The winners will play for the gold medal, whle the loser will play for the bronze.
